If the kitten is defective in any way, the mother will either kill it or leave it to die. This is nature -- 'survival of the fittest' and all that. She's not crazy -- she's ennsuring the survival of her other kits.
If you have removed the kitten, and you want to hand-rear it, get advice from your vet. Get milk-replacement formula and follow the directions. This will require you to feed every two hours, day and night. And stimulate the kit to urinate and defectate. And it could still die.
Please get the mother spayed as soon as you possibly can. She doesn't sound like a very good mother. You want to go through all this again?

This kitten is defective in some way, Maybe mentally defective. You can't know this but the mother does.
This is natures way of dealing with defects and Bad genes.
The mother doesn't enjoy this but does this of a duty to the whole of cat society.
If you can't watch this leave and let her take care of it.
You don't have any cat milk, cows milk is not good for a kitten.
If you must interfere, Kill the kitten and bury it, Grieve for it and LEARN from the experience.
I am sorry for you and also glad, because you will learn from this.

There may be reasons why she did what she did, and it could be due to her sensing a defective kitten. But you are dealing with a lot of issues with the newborn kittens, and I have posted a link that will answer most of your questions.
If you feel you have to separate the kittens for them to survive, the link has a section on orphan kittens, and the type of milk they need. It is a very daunting task to raise orphans, and you really need a vet to be involved, but the link will give you a start.

This is very common for a cat with her first litter. She may be trying to eat the afterbirth and not the actual kitten. If she is indeed eating the kitten I would let nature take its course. She may do it with the next one as well, but she should be getting things figured out by the third.

Sometimes animals do that because they're trying to "save" the baby. Also, the cat's hormones are a little crazy. It's alright, just watch the kitten when it's around its mother so that doesn't happen again.
