I have a toy poodle, and he gets in these fits when he catches his breath, it sounds like an asthma attack. He usually does it when he is excited, but sometimes it is random. I asked the vet and he said it was his trachea collapsing, because he is so small. He said it was normal for little dogs. I just try to calm him down when it happens.

Sometimes dogs breath hard when they're excited or distressed. As long as she's not doing it while laying about or sleeping then I can't see a problem. :/ There was a dog on Dog Whisperer that made a raspy breathing noise when it wanted attention or was over excited.

If you want professional advice, though, because you're really worried then you could always phone up your vet. It's free and they don't usually mind giving you small advice over the phone. :)

Some dogs (especially those with short noses, like bulldogs) do something very odd-looking called a "reverse sneeze". They breathe hard and it does look very much like a person having an asthma attack. But it is harmless. They do it when they get something up their nose. To be on the safe side, call your vet. Good luck.
