Windows Vista is an operating system, much like Windows XP. So you have what you need already. You see, you would GET this, if you needed an operating system. But it is WAY TOO Technical to install, and you would have TROUBLE. it does not provide enough benefits to make it worth while. So skip that. It might not even work on your old computer. Windows Vista comes in many flavors, starting at just above $100.

Your next computer will HAVE Windows Vista. But let's keep your nice old computer alive for a few more years.

Let me just tell you about one tiny feature that is kind-of cool. If you have a Widescreen monitor, you will find yourself using the left side just like you do now. The extra space on the right will show nifty gadgets. One gadget is a big CLOCK. Another one is an RSS feed reader that displays headlines from the internet. BUT you have a clock in the lower right corner. You can get a free RSS FEEDREADER download from http://www.download.com

As far as security issues go, WIndows Vista has the same darn rotten and nasty problems like Spyware, viruses, adware and Malware. Again, you must ensure that these security programs are updated, and scans are run regularly. Without maintenance, your computer will surely die.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Well if you have windows xp system, then right at this point of time, its not advised to upgrade to vista since vista is having several driver incompatibility issues and even if you upgrade then some of your previous softwares just might not work. So as of now people are choosing to be content with xp. What you can do to give xp, a vista like feel are :

1) Upgrade your internet explorer from its current version to the latest version thats IE v7,

2) Upgrade your windows media player to windows media player 11 beta,

3) Upgrade your Outlook Express to Windows Mail created for vista but works with xp as well,

4) Finally you can download Windows Defender, a free anti-spyware solution for your computer designed for vista but works with xp.

All the updates are available from Microsoft website. So go ahead and make your life jingalala. All the best!!!

Windows Vista is not a single program: it is the Operating System your computer runs on. And if it is worth the purchase? I doubt it. At the moment it simply doesn't add enough features or new stuff for it to be worthwhile.
If you are gonna buy it, make sure your computer is up to date, as far as hardware goes. If your computer is over 1.5 years old, chances are Vista won't be able to run with all the features (like Aero, the desktop interface) on it. If you have less then 1Gb of RAM, you defenitely shouldn't go with Vista (1 Gb is fine for XP, but is actually a bare minimum for Vista).

Then there's the "hassle" of having to install everything: depending on the size of your C: drive you might have to format the drive in order to install Vista (which means backing up all data first, format, install and restore the backup).
In any case: you'll have to reinstall all programs you are using now (with the exception of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, since MS has incorporated these into Vista like they did in XP). Chances are you'll find some programs won't work in Vista, so you'll have to buy upgrades for these too. Or you'll find that manufacturers have not rewritten their programs to work under Vista yet, so they won't work anymore.

Vista is a replacement for Windows XP. It's Micro$oft's latest operating system.

Personnally, I'd wait until other folks have worked out the bugs. I've seen alot of people complaining about Vista on this forum.

Good luck!

If you are happy with XP, I recommend staying there for a while to let Vista get the bugs worked out. Vista will consume more of your PCs resources.

I have heard very bad things about Vista. And I think if what you are using right now works, then continue to use it. I wouldn't spent the money for something that everyone is complaining about.

If your current operating system is performing I would not upgrade. Why spend the funds for this and then learn that your pc's processor and RAM are probably too small to drive it? You cannot upgrade the processor.

I suggest waiting until the current pc is no longer practical to run and buy a new system rather than upgrade the operating system.

I have it, the 64 bit version, it is fine. I got a FAST computer to run it though and 4 gig of RAM. Some older games and programs won't run on it.. but the ones that do are fine.
