Breast cancer is a disease in which cancerous cells in the breast start to grow rapidly in an uncontrolled manner. Breast cancer is a common cancer in women over age 50.

While the number of women who have breast cancer increases with age, the disease may also affect women in their 40s and rarely women in their 30s. Having a family history of breast cancer is an important risk factor, but most women who develop breast cancer do not have any known risk factors. Although rare, breast cancer can occur in men.

The most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump or thickening in the breast. Other symptoms include changes in the skin of the breast, spontaneous nipple discharge or bleeding, and scaling or crusting of the nipple.

Treatment for breast cancer depends on the stage of the breast cancer, whether nearby lymph nodes contain cancer cells, and how the cancer cells look under the microscope. Treatment usually includes surgery to remove the cancer. Chemotherapy and radiation may also be used to treat breast cancer.-

Breast Cancer

Also called: Breast carcinoma
Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include

Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older
Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55
Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Men can have breast cancer, too, but the number of cases is small.

Breast cancer is a 'catch all' phrase used to identify any cancer located in the tissue located outside the ribs, in a band from armpit to armpit, including all breast tissue.

There are a several cancers that fall into this category, some more common than others.

Even when a cancer is normally found elsewhere in the body, and is rarely found in breast tissue, such as small cell carcinoma, more commonly known as lung cancer, it is called breast cancer when it occurs in the breast tissue.

The official diagnosis should refer to the type of cancer as well as the location.

Cancer of breast is know as breast cancer :-). Breast cancer is defined as any abnormal growth in breast tissue that is inconsistent with age and sex of the individual ( males can also have breast cancer though 98% are in females ) its of two types 1) benign and 2) malignant . Benign cancer is slow growing does not produce much complications do not spread and is easier to treat having a favourable prognosis (outcome) whereas malignant cancer on other hand may be fast or slow growing spreads and invades other tissues is difficult to treat and has poor prognosis as compared to benign.

You know I cant and someone close to me is going through it !
Physical : Check Webmd or multiple sites including Cancer.org
Emotional: Roller coaster...long expectations between receiving the news and treatment. Dont count on a thing/numbness or getting through the ordeal
Financially: Drain with the multitude of doctors/specialists to see plus it seems like your regular care physicians (primary and rheumatologist) visits are popping up.
My thoughts: I have knowledge of relatives who tried to be survivors but died before their expected life time. Get things in order. Enjoy life as much as you can and know that the professionals, your support group and others are there for the asking/draw from them. Openly talk to them.
