They say that Ubuntu has these advantages:
- free
- easy software install
- easy hardware install
Go for it. http://www.ubuntu.com/
When it comes to collaborating with people that use Windows, you may find issues. Other than that... it's an OK computer system
Good luck and Happy Computing!

My current favorite distribution is Ubuntu.
http://www.ubuntu.com/
Ubuntu has received a lot of good press recently on its good, user friendly interface plus some variations they offer for education (EdUbuntu), running on old hardware (Xubuntu), if you like the KDE interface (Kubuntu), or running on server class hardware (the server version of v7.04)
Ubuntu can also be run from a "liveCD" so you can play with it without having to really install it on a system.
After that, Knoppix http://www.knoppix.org
Knoppix has been around awhile. It was the first liveCD that I used and I still use a custom version for netforensics.
Then SuSe http://en.opensuse.org
SuSe was recently acquired by Novell, but they still maintain their open source roots.
Here's a basic comparison article from WiKi of several distro's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions
Here's another good article "Choosing a desktop Linux Distro" from DesktopLinux

Hi,
I have always found Ubuntu nice, but for user friendly you want Kubuntu (it has the same core, but a much more user-friendly interface).
Another one I haven't tried so much, but is supposed to be really easy to use is Fedora linux.
I'll post links to both OS's in my sources.
Hope this helps!

Ubuntu is very user friendly. You can download two versions of Ubuntu - the actual install and the 'live' CD which lets you run the os from the CD - slower performance but you can try it out.

Supposedly Ubuntu is most "Windows friendly". SUSE Linux is ok too, but, Linux is NOT easy to use for the average user, and requires extensive use of command line commands to get things running.

I would recommend Knoppix if you want a distro with everything on the DVD.
Also, Fedora Core is nice too.
Hope it helps.
