It really depends on the church. Usually everyone is welcome, but, depending on the people you might get some strange looks.

When I was young and more of an agnostic I hitch hiked around the country. Churches were often great places for handouts or to work for food back then and all I had to do was show up and look "holy" or "repentant".

I found the larger non-denominational churches to be pretty accepting in general. Smaller baptist, methodist and presbyterian churches were very dependent but usually okay. There are some I just stayed away from, mennonite's, for example.

Catholics, Mormons and the Salvation Army churches usually have really strict rules about charity around the church but can be very accepting, but, they didn't want me hanging around much for the after service fellowship.

I would shoot for a larger non-denominational church or a smaller methodist, presbyterian or baptist church.

Church hopping is really educational, especially learning about the differences between the "same" churches in different places in the US. It is all very different.

You would be surprised how much the services vary. Be advised that at some churches you will be "encouraged" to do an alter call, even if you do not feel led.

Most churches these days accept you wearing jeans or dresses. I'm sure you will be just fine in that outfit. What to expect during worship will vary from church to church, but mostly what goes on is singing as a group, the choir will sing if they have one, offering will be taken up, a few announcements and maybe some prayer requests spoken, and then the message will come, followed by a song, some prayer to close the service, and then all will be dismissed. That is a fair rundown of events for worship in general. Have a blessed birthday celebration in church=) Happy Birthday!

You can wear ANYTHING you like to church with in reason of curse jeans are fine and if anyone in that church thinks other wise then they don't need to be there. It all depends on the church you are going to , some are old fashion and some are up to date. You should expect singing for at least 30 mins or so and the preacher only preaches about 15-20 mins really usually after 11:30 he gets started doing that.. You may have to seek out a new church you like better then the one you go to day but don't give up there is one out there for you. have a blessed day and take care.

If you have ANY kind of dress, that would be more appropriate than jeans....but if not, go with the black jeans. Also wear nice shoes, not the ones you wear around the house and stuff...

Depending on which church you go to you can see a LOT of things....

Which denomination?

I would not go to a typical Baptist church, or any church on the Far Right. You will be expected to "dress up" if you attend these Fire And Brimstone, High and Holy churches. Go to a "liberal" church, such as the Church of Christ. They will be happy to see you as you are. It's good to know you are not going to a Mormon church, as many believe this is a false religion.

As far as what you can expect to happen, that all depends on you. If you allow the words of a true and faithful Christian Pastor to come into your mind, then the Holy Spirit many also come into you soul. You will know if this happens. Other than that, you can expect a pleasent gathering of friends who come to worship the one who died for you, and for me, and for the world.

what church are you going to? if you are gonna attend a seventh day adventist church, the service is very solemn (no shouting, no loud instruments) the worship is very solemn, it makes you feel God in your heart.and the bretherens are very warm. you won't notice it's your first time. adventists are the friendliest people i have met on earth. if you don't have any dress, that would be fine. they will still welcome you no matter how you look. God looks at the heart, not on the outside beauty. you can wear something decent and that would make you comfortable.
happy birthday!!!

I'd wear a skirt to be on the safe side. You have to tell us what kind of church it is before we can tell you want you can expect during service- so many denominations have variations that can be important.

I think it's wonderful you'd like to go and share your gratitude by joining in a service.

Most churches just want people to dress in clean and modest attire. If you go to a church like mine http://www.alcf.net it's a "come as you are" church because God loves you just as you are but He loves us too much to leave us the way that we are.

You have a great family and friends. You don't go to church! That kinda says that you don't need to worship false gods to have a happy life. Stay home and enjoy your family and your life instead of wasting time listening to someone else telling you how to be happy.
