I believes the sole/id/lifeforce enters when the unborn child is old enough to interact with the world around it.
& yeah I know the flaws in that. Some people NEVER interact.

The reason that there is such a variety of answers, not just here, but all over this planet, is that we human's, when we are manifesting in these monkey suits that we call bodies, develop this extraordinary 'linear' way of thinking.
Everything needs to be broken down to it's apparent constituent parts, and measured, despite the clear evidence that practically everything that we have ever measured seems to change over time, and with 'new data' we have to measure all over again !
OK, so here's the thing according to this 'oracle'.
We are, indeed, two part beings, one part energetic, what people call the 'soul', or the 'spirit', or the 'spark' of Life, or whatever, the thing is that this part is not 'solid', it is quite literally 'ethereal'. The other part is physical, it is the lump of meat that we trundle around in.
Now, what is then relationship between the two ? Your question, and most of the answers given so far all seem to think that at the moment of conception a 'body' starts to appear, in the form of a developing foetus, and that at some time a soul gets 'stuck on', a bit like the wheels on a car going down the production line at the factory.
I suggest that this is not so. That it is the 'energetic' part that is outside of this dimensionality, and creates the 'vehicle', the body, for each manifestation that it ( they do not have gender ) desires to have. The 'process', if we call it that, is that the type of life, and the purpose for which it will be lived are the first things to be determined, then the circumstances that will most likely generate the desired opportunities are selected, such as gender, race, culture, physical location, economic status and so on, will lead to the selection of the progenitors, both female and male. With all of this selected and agreed with the other participants, the actual manifestation of the desired body begins.
This is a very rough outline, obviously there is much more.
The idea of 'souls' sitting around in some 'Guff' waiting to be called to be slotted into some random body, or becoming body is actually very cute, but not anywhere near to the mark. Life seems to be very 'random', but actually is loaded with purpose and 'Intent'.
The energetic entities that form these bodies are far from sitting around waiting for the next 'slice' of Life, mostly because here is another part of the misunderstanding, neither 'Time', nor 'Space' are linear, they are infinitely flexible, and do not exist in the realm that enfolds this one. In this way 'We' are doing all of this at the same 'Time'.
We are creating 'Past', 'Present' and 'Future' as we go along.
Therefore our 'history' is literally still being written, as well as our 'future'. And we are doing it all 'Now'. :-)))
I hope that :
a. This makes some kind of sense, if it doesn't then it is my fault for poor explanation.
b. That it gives someone 'food' for thought.

The idea of a soul came about because the ancients had no concept that the part of us that thinks is actually as physical as the parts we use to talk, walk, breathe etc. We call it the mind.
The mind is the software that runs on the hardware of our brains. Our minds are physical and are not created in some fantasy land by some super being. If they were completely spiritual and not physical, then they wouldn't be affected by drugs and alcohol would they, since in religious speak, the mind is non physical.
Don't forget that the folks who dreamed up religion had no clue of how the world worked, and attrubuted everything they didn't understand to the work of some super being.
They also fell on their knees and asked for rain, would anyone do that now, now that we know how rain happens, now that we can forecast rain ourselves, or does every meteorological bureau have a priest sitting in the corner?
Earthquakes were seen as the work of the devil and hell was down below our feet. It was a fiery hell because red hot lava spewed out of volcanos and sulphurous fumes bellowed out of vents and made weird groaning noises. Do we still believe this? Well anyone that does is a mighty sad person.
Religion was brought about by ignorance and fear of death. Heaven was invented by unsrcupulous leaders to persuade their warriors that, if the died in battle, they would be rewarded in heaven as heroes and if a muslim, would be rewarded by being given a couple of dozen virgins to enjoy - yeah right!
If you suffered from some nasty disease and wondered why your loving was allowing you to suffer in pain, the good old witch doctors, now known as priests, would make up some excuse, like you were being punished by the man in the sky, or it was a test of your faith that your baby had three legs and spent all its time screaming in pain.
The man in the sky was gentle and loving and all seeing (knew everything), but didn't.
If you are a christian, then you believe that some ignorant tribesman who was supposedly born to a virgin (who already had children) and was fertilised by a bloke with wings, was also the big man in the sky in disguise.
During his lifetime, the son of the big man in the sky (who was really the man in the sky) lived amongst people who were mainly sun worshippers.
That's why we have SUNday as our religious day and Mo(o)nday follows (some folks thought the moon was a god). Then we have Saturday, after the god Saturn and the rest of the days of the week are named after Norse gods. So christian belief wasn't that strong or we would have godsday, jesusday, gabrielsday and maybe satansday instead of saturday wouldn't we?
So the son of the man in the sky, who was telling everyone that his dad(who was really himself) was the only true god, would have been confronted by the majority of the population who believed that the SUN was god.
They would have said, "OK, if your dad is the only true god, then what is that big warm shiny thing up in the sky?", to which the son of the man in the sky would have said, "It's a big huge ball of hydrogen undergoing nuclear fusion and turning into helium and other heavier elements."
This would have been such an important revelation that it would have been written into all the literature of the time, wouldn't it?

Over and over, the scriptures teach that man IS a soul; not that man HAS a soul. Beginning with the first mention of humans, Genesis teaches that Adam came to be a living soul. The teaching that man has some thing inside him called a soul that exists independent of the person does not find its source in scripture. In the Bible, even animals are souls.

No it does not any more than sperm does.
I believe you know when the soul or spirit enters the body because that is when the heart starts beating. It is the spirit coming into the embryo that kick starts the body and makes it a living person, rather than a living clump of cells.

I hope you are too young to know and enquire about the subtle aspects about the soul ,mind and the concept of rebirth. I may take a full page or two to write on the subject which is difficult. I would rather suggest you 2 books to read which may satisfy your inquiry.
An autobiography of a yogi by Paramahmasa yogananda
Conversation with a spirit by Dolores canon(?)
Good luck

Conception is a tiny miracle that happens every day by God's wisdom and grace. It is God who imparts life and the Bible does not clearly explain things like how the eternal spirit joins with the body. Apparently God creates a new spirit with each new life that He causes to appear in the womb.
Psalms 139:13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them.
Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

What do you think? Now, alot of people don't like it, but life begins at conception. The reason everyone says it doesn't, is because they whene they go have sex, they don't want a kid. And think about it, later in your life you're just sitting there next to your husband or wife with your 2 kids, wondering what the other was feeling during the abortion, and what they would be like today. (And just so you know, the babies do cry in pain during abortion, I've seen pictures.) So, whene you get to the bottom of it, people say that unborn babies don't have life ( AKA a soul ) until birth, because they don't want to feel like their comminting murder, even though they are. The reason doctors say that babies aren't "alive" until they take their first breath, because one of their biggest money makers is abortion.

They aren't on a conveyor belt. There are only a set number of spirits(not souls)...
Our spirits were up in Heaven with God...but since we knew nothing others than happiness and peace in Heaven, we didn't know it was happy or peaceful. So God sent us to earth, where we have free will, sin, heartache, sadness, anger, etc....so that when it's our turn to return back to Heaven we will know how perfect it is and how happy we are, and we will be so pleased to be with God....

BTW with the rate china is popping out babies, they don't have time to talk about the latest on TV and the radio...sorry...

No they are not in heaven waiting. The soul of a person does not exist until conception. It is a new life and a new soul.
Neither the egg nor the sperm have an immortal soul, but at the joining of the two, at the moment that new individual is created, so is the soul.
