A pillow cover is just a pillow sham with another name. A pillow case is used on a pillow you sleep on and a pillow sham is simply decorative for pillows. Here is the answer I gave to another person here (by the way, it was the Best Answer :)
Sure... it's the pillow case, usually with a decorated edge, that matches the bedspread, comforter or duvet. It is usually placed on the top of the bed to complete the look and isn't really used on pillows that are used to sleep on...

A pillow cover is just a plain pillow case that matched the sheets., whereas a sham is a fancy cover with something like lace around it to match the bedding

A pillow sham is meant to be decorative and to lay on top of the bed cover. A pillow (case) cover is meant to cover the pillow under the bed cover. The one you sleep on.

As I understand, and I am just a stupid male, a sham is meant to cover throw pillows that decorate the bed, and a cover is meant to cover the pillows you actually lay down to sleep on.

ISN'T A PILLOW COVER A PILLOW CASE? IF SO, THEN A SHAM (OR FAKE) JUST LIES THERE AND COVERS THE PILLOW. BUT IT'S NOT TO SLEEP ON. RIGHT?

Pillow covers are open at one end, pillow shams are made with a envelope closure, a flap of overlapping fabric in back.
