I just received an LCD flat screen TV as a gift. It has an internal DVD player. Which DVD player will give me the better picture quality: the one it comes with, or an external DVD player hooked up to the TV with component (the red, green, and blue) video cables?

I have never been and never will be a fan of combos. 1/ the non-tv part (ie. VCR or DVD player) is often sub-standard and, 2/ when one goes you have to get rid of both.

If you can exchange it, go get a tv that is only a tv and then get yourself a good DVD player. My favorite at the moment is the Oppo DV 981-HD. http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_features.html

Straight from the factory, it is an awesome unit. And when you have more money, you can get it modified and have a truly amazing DVD player that comes very close to an HD unit.

it depends on the make of the set-if for example it's a samsung then the DVD player will be samsung based-if you are not too picky about picture quality then save your cash and use the internal player. if you want a bit of quality then i swear by panasonic. their image quality is second to none if your tv has component inputs then grab a player with these outputs and the performance will blow your mind.

I would return that TV and buy a bigger HDTV and then hook a PS3 to it... because it has Blue Ray. And that would give you good picture quality

You said it has one built into it? I would stick with that.
