Go to settings, then system settings, then scroll right down to system info and select that, it will say 30gb of 55gb for example.

On your XMB (cross media bar) find the 'settings' section, then go down to system information.
Free space refers to your hard disc. the first number is your free disc space, the second is the size of your hard drive.
Bare in mind, the size will be smaller than the 'advertised' size. E.g. i have a 60GB drive and it shows as 55GB.

Look at the disk tray. If it's black, it's 20 gb. If it's silver, it's 60 gb or 80 gb. When you bought your PS3, did it come with Motor Storm included with your PS3? Yes, it's 80 gb. No, it's 60 gb.
