Well, at first, Christianity was simply a denomination of Judaism. The first recorded instance of seperation is in Acts 11. Most scholars think that Acts was written circa 60-70 AD. If that is correct, then the name was first used between 30 and 70 AD.
The faith itself, however was already established by that point and did nothing but continue to grow.
Edit...Justin, good answer. your date is c. 311-325 AD for the Roman Empire.

A lot of that depends on exactly what you mean by Christianity. You could almost say that Christianity started before Jesus was ever crucified as he had followers who believed he was the son of God.
However, I believe Christianity as the world knows it today really took hold when the emperor Constantine made it the official religion of Rome(?). I want to say some where around 400 AD, but I'm no historian.

Astonishing the number of people who describe the emergence of Christianity AFTER Christ's death.
The emergence occurred ~2000 years ago, when Christ's disciples removed his body after His Crucifixion to cement the belief he was divine and to usher in the era of monotheism-prior to that, western man had been polytheistic.

The Pauline kind of Christianity we see today became popular around 300 AD and started with Paul. The Original kind of Christianity based on the Kingdom Gospel Jesus preached started when Jesus preached it.

Depends on what you want. Since Jesus worshiped his Father, Adam's son Abel was the first faithful until death.
If you mean following Christ officially, in 33CE when he established the new covenant and fulfilled the old Mosaic one.
If you mean after Jesus' death, the first time they were called Christians was in Antioch. (Acts 11:26)

Christianity is a faith that encompasses followers, or disciples, of Christ, i.e. Jesus Christ as Lord who lived a sinless life and died a sin-bearing death to bring justification, forgiveness, and salvation to all who place their faith in Him.
Some will say that Christianity started with Christ's birth, death, or even the start of His ministry. Christ is our Saviour, Redeemer, and Messiah. He is the One the Jews have always been looking for. He fulfilled many, many prophesies from prophets like Isaiah, who lived nearly 700 years prior to the birth of Jesus, to the angels announcing the birth to the sheperds in the fields. He is the One - Advocate before God the Father - for which Job sought after (and Job may have been written before Genesis) [Job 19:25]. He is the One that Eve was waiting for - and mistook as Cain - to fulfull God's curse on the serpent...to bruise him [Satan] on the head [Gen. 3:15].
So, you can say that mankind has sought after Jesus Christ since the beginning of man. They sought Christ; they sought to follow Him; they sought Christianity from the beginning of man -- although not formally called Christianity. The birth of Jesus, His sinless life, His sin-bearing sacrificial death for us all, and His subsequent overpowering of death and resurecction mark the fulfillment of of God's love to mankind -- a fulfillment to those who sought Christ -- a transformation of Christianity from seeking Him to following Him.
