There are a few things that come to mind.

1. Science provides better explanations for how the world works and why things are the way they are then any religion (compare Evolution to Genesis, there really is no contest)[*].
2. Increasing religious tolerance means that it is more acceptable to not believe in mythical beings than it was at any other time in history along with people being given the permission or even the blessing to think for themselves.
3. People noticing the corruption of the religious organisations and becoming somewhat cynical about all religions because of that.
4. Religious terrorists providing advertising for the benefits of atheism.
5. Increased prosperity and life means that we have a realistic hope of getting heaven on earth instead of waiting until we die.
6. A lot of parents aren't bothering to pass religion on to their children which will tend to make it more likely for the children to not be religious.
7. The average intelligence of our species is increasing every generation which may have something to do with it as well (those who are more intelligent do tend to be less religious).

Those seem to be the main ones (and some minor ones).

[*] Whilst it was certainly possible to be an atheist without such scientific knowledge one would have no idea where we came from while someone who understands the science even if only at a rudimentary level has something that could actually compete with the religious explanation (and beat it in most cases).

As for the number of atheists, non religion is pretty much the only growth area among 'religions' (Islam is growing due to fertility but that can't go on forever) and about half of those who when asked would say they don't have a religion are atheists (though very few would actually call themselves that) with the rest being theists who don't belong to an organised church and just kind of make up their own belief system. The triumph of atheism is by no means inevitable but if current trends continue it will eventually dominate.

i grew to become into raised Christian. while i grew to become right into a young person I had a born-lower back journey and grew to become into confident that I felt the Holy Spirit in me. i began questioning it as quickly as I discovered extra approximately historic previous and the mythologies of alternative cultures. i desperate to study the Bible with an open innovations and desperate that the being defined in it may not probable be the suited power interior the universe. I explored different religions and traditions and had a lot of a similar reviews that I have been instructed have been info of the Christian God. At no element did I place self belief in all of us else for suggestion.

"But know this, difficult times will come in the last days. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of religion but denying its power." (2 Timothy 3:1-4)

In short, the Bible says that people will abandon God. I also believe that there are many people who say they are Christians, but do not even know what the Bible says. The Bible is misquoted and taken out of context all the time. If one is unaware of what it actually says, then one can be deceived -- especially by those who are religious leaders and who throw away parts of the Bible which do not agree with their worldview, or they fear would turn others away. Therefore, unless one actually takes the time to know what the Bible says, one will probably be taken in by other philosophies.

are they? i would like to believe it's true, which is why i feel like i have to be suspicious. where are the statistics? possibly it's just that more people who already had their doubts are speaking out these days. maybe it's just fashionable. i don't feel the need to construct a myth about the inevitable triumph of atheism, it doesn't seem inevitable at all. religion has lots of practice getting its hooks into any new communication technologies, from books to radio and tv, the internet is no exception.

The Internet is a library to the world.

People are starting to find out stuff for themselves without having to go to or pay for college courses in comparative religion and philosophy.

People can exchange ideas without killing each other if they differ.

Lets hear it for freedom of thought!

Our stares and stripes represents freedom in this grate
nation. It hangs in every schoolroom all across this land.
Schoolrooms where our children are not allowed to pray.
When everyone else is pledging elegance to our flag, I
will bow my head and say a little prayer for the children and
for the souls of those who would teach them there is no God.
To destroy faith and hope in the life of a child is as low as
anyone can go.
Thanks for a good question.

Nowadays, more people believe that they own their lives and they control it. They may be thinking that when they die, it is the end. They're confident because they have their own will. They may be thinking that "If I can see it, I will believe it". They are always afraid of what they don't know. They always hate what they don't know. "They may be thinking that " No prayers are answered". Then, that is the reason why they became Atheist.

Namely because there is little differance between ANY religion.

They all require the same thing, and promise the same thing.

They require YOUR money, and YOUR support, and YOUR belief.

They promise, a "wonderful" eternity. They promise damnation for those who would hurt/doubt/not believe.

Sounds just like any other government of the world to me. Take YOUR money....promise to harm (forever) those that don't comply with their beliefs.
