He gets mid tour R&R. Depending upon where he goes he "may" get to come home for 2 weeks, but usually they just get taken out of the country and flew to some other resort place to relax for a few.

Hi there. This question is rather open ended, as circumstances & other happenings can differ from one day to another. Yes, it is true troops EARN their R&R. But actually being granted it is a coin toss, at best.
EXAMPLE: My youngest brother is currently deployed on his 3rd tour in Iraq. Shortly after being deployed this time, he found out his wife is expecting their 2nd baby. He put in for leave around the due date. As of now, the Army has said yes, he can come home. He has been told NO as well. What it all comes down to is what is happening in Iraq at the time. He really will not know if he will be home until he is on the flight.
So, in answer to the question, it is hard to say. I do hope he gets to come home, though. Your nephew & my brother alike.

Well I assume that your nephew is probably Army because of the long deployment. I know that with the Army they are given 15 days for leave. They do not count travel time in that amount. My husband said that guys were coming home for R&R after being there for only 2 months. He could go as early as that or later than the halfway mark.
I don't know if they have changed their policies since he was deployed.

Hi, you do not mention what branch of service he is in so, here are a few places you can try.
www.militaryonesource.com They have a toll free number 24/7 that you can call and ask your question. Also, if there is a base nearby call and ask for the Public Affairs Officer. As a normal rule, you are gone for the entire deployment. But, usually there is some sort of R&R leave, but it may be within the area. Unless of course it is an emergency and then you get "Emergency Leave". Different services have different rules.
Hope that helps.

Since the army extended their rotation to 18 months, your nephew will be able to get 18 days of leave. He will be able to put in for it after 3 months of being in Iraq until 4 months when the unit is suppose to return.
What they will do is take into account everyone's days they are requesting and go by who needs it first (such as those who want to come home for certain family events (babies being born, graduation, weddings, 1st Communions)). They also need to leave spots for those that might get a emergency (red cross message). After, they will start giving out dates but they wont get a certain pinpoint date. It is taking about 3-4 days to get to the US from Iraq.
Now your nephew has 2 choices, sort of.
1. They will fly him anywhere to the united states for R&R
2. They might fly him somewhere else in the World. I have had several friends who took their R&R to Austrialia.
His R&R won't start until he signs in in the United States and ends the day he signs out. None of his Fly time will count towards him.
Good luck and tell him thanks and be safe.

In most cases, he will be granted a 14-18 day leave period, and the military will fly him to and from any airport in the country for free. They will fly him into either Atlanta or Houston, depending on where he wants to go. My wife and I live in New York, but I am going to meet her for her mid tour leave in California, and the Army has no problem flying her there.
First he will go to Baghdad International Airport for a flight to Kuwait. Then he will be flown from Kuwait to either Atlanta or Houston, and then he will be flown home. His leave will start when he touches down in Atlanta or Houston, and end there too, his travel time to and from Iraq won't count.
People like Tugboat and Mark101112 are @$$holes, don't listen to them, over 500,000 men and women have gone to Iraq, and less than 4,000 have been killed. The odds are very high that he will come home without a scratch. He has worse odds driving from his base to his home every day when he isn't deployed honestly. 99 percent of people who serve in a war come home.

As far as I know, he will get 18 days of leave. They changed that from 15 days because of the extensions. More than likely if he is single with no spouse he will get leave first and then the married soldiers get leave. Thats how my husband unit is doing. He left in June and he hes not coming home for R&R until next april.

yes he will get leave his commander will let the people in the unit know when they get there and, they don't send them all home at once but divide it up so it may be 3-4 months after he gets there or later he will get 18 days,( they added 3 more when they extended the deployments from 12 to 15) it will take him several days to get back in USA usually Atlanta or some other large airport when he gets stateside he will sign in thats when his leave starts from there he can fly anywhere he wants

Your nephew is a freedom fighter, doing no less then giving hope and freedom for people who have nothing.
Thank you.
I will not walk away from a person getting beat to death, when American truns her back on fellow man is the day we are no better then the people who wish to distroy us.
So I guess some of you will trun down protection from our Military given the chance? I'm sure when your looking down the loud end of an AK you will say, "No Mr. Bush, I dont support freedom, so I should not have your protection"
in 4,000 years the word Democrat is going to me known as "the group that destroyed America" OKR, Cowards, silver toungs, mindless hippies.

you may hear and understand that we are reducing the variety of troops there yet no longer pulling out completely for a whilst yet. regardless of this there's a rotation time table and those troops coming abode now are being replaced by individuals that have been scheduled to place in to substitute them final fall till now the elections ever took place. you in basic terms can't go away those that have been there because of the fact the spring of 2008 there till finally it is throughout. So the rotation technique will proceed to happen yet finally it's going to be much less because of the fact the foot print of the army is decreased there. additionally understand that we are plussing up in Afghanistan so we are no longer out of the woods yet by any ability. i assume no person became listening whilst countless generals reported we would be there till 2010-2012 back in 2002 whilst this all became beginning?

There is a new military web site VAJoe.com it is for family or friends of armed forces all branches.
Go there and they will be able to answer your questions.
Don't listen to all these naysayers. We will pray the hand of God be on him and all the units to protect them.
My cousin Nancy's husband has been there 4 or 5 times and is now in Afganistan and he has been just fine.
