I save the bottle that the cooking oil came in, or an empty container that is similar; put a small funnel in the mouth of the bottle and pour off the cooking oil into the funnel. Remove the funnel and cap the bottle; then dispose.

Never pour it down the drain. It will stick in your pipes/garbage disposal and smell horrible. If you have an old coffee can, pour it in there then stick it in the freezer. Once it's full throw it out with the trash. If you don't have a coffee can, use the container it came in or an empty milk jug (though since they're plastic, I would not freeze them as the containers could crack in the freezer). As a last resort, if you can't do any of the above, you can dump it out in your yard. However this is likely to attract animals like skunks or raccoons and your neighbors probably won't be happy.

Never pour it down the drain it is absolutely terrible for the environment. Best thing is to let it cool before pouring it into a container then throwing it into the rubbish.

If you don't mind the inconvience, send it off to be recycled. It can be used for alternate fuel sources. Otherwise, if you are referring to a normal house, there is no "proper" way. Just the way people do it.
1. down the drain
2. pour it outside in the ground at the woodline
3. dispose in the trash and hope it doesn't leak, and if you have trash service- hope that they don't find out
My personal method, as long as it is cooking oil and not grease, I send it down the drain and chase it with dawn and hot water.

I am not sure if this proper but I save it after I strain it. Put it in freezer. then When I go camping I put it in y cooler as an Ice pack. It stays cold for a long time then I use it after it has thawed to light my campfire.

I reuse mine a couple of times, it has more flavour in it after a couple of uses. Just strain it and pour it into a container. Otherwise get it recycled.

At the restaurant where I work it apparently never gets old or filthy enough to discard. They just keep using it...
