you're supposed to wait exactly 24 hours and then you're SUPPOSED to shower with your tat. dont cover it. take the soap and lather it in your hands then GENTLY put some soap on your tat. DO NOT rub hard, scrub, scratch, ect. its okay if you get some shampoo on it while your washing ur hair just make sure that you rinse it off really good before u get out of the shower.when your drying off be extra carefull around your tattoo. gently pat dry with the towel, DO NOT rub your tattoo to get it dry, be gentle. after your dressed put some of the healing ointment/lotion on that the tattoo artist gave you or told u to buy.
its really important that u know how to take care of it, otherwise its not going to heal right and your gonna have a crappy tattoo that your either gonna have to cover up or get it redone. so after you shower and everything, call your tattoo artist and have him/her repeat what they said. write it down if you have to.
good luck with your tat

Hi there yes it is OK to shower with a new tattoo from a few hours old.
If and when you decide to shower/bath the new tattoo should be the last thing to get wet when you enter the shower/bath and the first thing that you dry when you get out this is to help the scabbing not to crack on the tattoo (if the scab cracks the tattoo can heal patchy) which results in a bad looking tattoo which may need a touch up (but I have never had any problems in over 10 years using these guide lines)
Do Not use soap or any other cleaning agent as this can bleach colours that are used in the tattoo (as some tribal tattoo's I have done people want colour instead of plain old black) also soap will dry the skin as the PH level is far to harsh for a fresh tattoo, warm water will do the job just fine on it's own.
After you have dried the skin (do not rub or again the scab will split and you will loose colour from the tattoo I personally let it dry own it's own with air) Apply a vitamin E based skin cream such Savlon or E45 as this has antiseptic agents in it that will not damage the tattoo and it will also aid the healing process.
Hope this helps and good luck with your new tattoo.

Recovering a tattoo is not a good idea. It's starting to heal and needs to breath so keep it clean and moisturized but not over moisturized. It's fine to shower with a new tattoo as long as it's not brand new like 10 minutes ago. Once it's started to heal keep it out of water as much as possible and don't wipe dry, pat dry only until it's done scabbing. If you have questions call your tattoo artist, it's part of the after care and part of their job to make sure your questions are answered. Seriously, call them. Good luck with the tat!

Its ok to shower but dont get it too wet - spesh if you have fine detail on the tattoo coz when it gets wet the scar expands and can ruin a tattoo - trust me

you just need to avoid having the water beat down on your tattoo. when i have fresh tattoo work on my back i face the shower head and bring a plastic cup to pour down my back and i wash the tattoo with my hand and some antibacterial soap only. don't re-cover it.
