Sure bet... VIN numbers aren't sacred. The first poster has it right, they probably want to run a carfax. Good way to get a tentative history on the car. If it sets your mind at ease, the VIN is viewable to anyone who would want to see it. A person in a parking lot could read it through your windshield.

They probably want to run a vehicle history check. It's quite safe to give out your VIN.
If you look at the cars for sale on eBay Motors, nearly every one lists the VIN so that prospective buyers can run history and DMV checks.
You wouldn't want to give out your SSN or DL number, but the VIN is safe.

Absolutely NOTHING to be worried about giving out the VIN, in fact, it is on public documents and anyone in the world can view it by contacting DMV.
The pending buyer just wants to do a history on the car, and by doing so, finds out if its been in accidents, floods, repossessed, damaged, and how many owners it has had and if the mileage is correct and accurate.
Its fine, go ahead and give it to him. A good question and it never hurts to ask rather than assume. Good luck, I am sure the buyer will be happy you let them have it.
