American military defense is important because our government has spent so much money and effort telling other countries what to do we've become a threat and so run the risk of being attacked (probably telling us to mind our own business). This is different from the military offense the government has indulged in recently, that will only get the US into more trouble.

The few countries that don't have a defence force of their own are either protected by someone else or are so small and useless nobody would really want to invade anyway.

It's good to have a defence force to disuade people from trying to invade. Even if it's just a few rifle companies, nobody wants to have to fight a professional defence force and sustain casualties.

There is a story about Ben Franklin that goes something like this...

When Franklin left the hall after the Constitution was ratified, a woman asked him, what did you give us, a Democracy or a Monarchy.

Franklin supposedly answered, "A Democracy, if you can keep it."
