Kick-boxing is more cardio. I do Tae kwon do and it works great, but going to kick-boxing is a great booster to getting out of those plateaus. And it's great for the heart and lungs.

Kickboxing is more intense if your just training. But if your in the ring, Tae Kwon Do is much better.

Kickboxing is way more demanding physically and provides a much better work out for your entire body while also encouraging physical conditioning for fighting like ab work. It also works your upper body much more than TKD. Along with this the cardiovascular benefits are greater in the heavy bag work outs, pad drills and shadow boxing that is often times done at a fast pace and for longer periods of time than in a traditional martial arts program where you have down time while watching, learning and perfecting less aerobically demanding things like kata/forms, self-defense, etc.

Try out both and choose the system that fits your needs and that you feel most comfortable with. No-one can tell you what that will be on this site, and either in the hands of a qualified and competent instructor will allow you to achieve your aims.
It's not the style (kickboxing or TaeKwon-Do) that is important per-se. It's the instructor, the class environment, the times that classes are help (i.e. suitable to allow you to attend), and the students you'll share classes with. If you love everything, you'll traing and achieve your desired goals. If you have much of it, you'll likely give up!

what kind of results are you looking for?
it would depend on the school or gym you go to.
personally, i tried both for a year, generally speaking, i thought the tae kwon do focused more on technique while kickboxing focused more on conditioning.

I have know idea what TKD is like but Kickboxing/Muay Thai is a heavy workout especially the pad work and sparing, im really not sure how much bag work TKD guys do but im guessing its not much since they focus more on speed and technique than power usually
All depends, if TKD do bagwork and sparing than it would be the same, probably still more for kickboxing since you punch also and have the added weight of the gloves

Hats off to Fra Diavlo- great answer with much little known info!!! In my personal experience, nothing has been harder than sanshou training and muay thai. I preferred sanshou, but it's hard to find real teachers in the US- I trained in China with a professional team, so they had great facilities and scientific regimens (the Chinese have money for those sorts of things- not like here where we have to work to pay our coaches and are often too tired fro work to train everyday). If you can find a contemporary wushu class, a good chinese coach (as opposed to a westerner who learned from someone) can push you to limits you never dreamed as well (both in cardio/plymetrics etc and flexibility), without the pain some people detest from contact fighting Good luck in your search.

Forget that last guy, kickboxing is 5 times the workout TKD is and it will give you more practical ways of fighting compared to TKD.
