OK,
This is my opinion as a foreign guy living in Korea. No I am not an English Teacher. But I have to deal with them day in and day out in my job at the airport. I despise them sorry.
There are a few catagories, let me explain;
1) The foreigner straight out of University, who extends that ever-so nice period of drunkeness and irresponsiblity that they had while at University. T
2) The young couple who like the above are straight out of University with a mickey mouse degree and are either looking for money to fund them going back to school or their next big adventure on their backpacking youth trip.
3) The middle aged guy who is hiding from child maintainance payments, or is here searching for that young trophy bride he can take home and show off to his family.
4) The guy who comes, gets happily married and gets just gets stuck in the rut of working as an English Teacher, and once stuck in that rut, he can't get out, or get a job in the real world.
Now, this is surprising, but I am yet to meet a foreigner male or female who is teaching English that can put a sentence together in understandable Korean. They just don't make the effort. These foreigners come here for the cheap drink.
There will be no change in this until the Korean Government tightens up the laws pertaining to Foreign English Teachers. To teach in Korea you only need a bachelors degree, not in any specialised field like Education!! Not only that, their is no criminal record check done on these guys either.
Shocking but true. 2 years ago, we picked up a guy wanted for baby swapping at Daegu international airport, an Interpol warrant flagged him as he was wanted for questioning about offences where he jumped bail for.
So YES they are rejects and YES they are loosers who come here to get pampered. Where else are they going to get given a free apartment, and 2thousand dollars a month to drink with!
And on another note, I would have to say, that any foreigner married to a Korean half his age, living in Korea deserves to be shot, no matter if you are an English teacher or not.
I AM NOT KOREAN, and I have seen on one occasion an American Pastor who was 53 years old married to a 28 year old girl with a PH.d in Divinity!! He would get up at the pulpit each sunday and read what she had typed the day before. They man had FRAUD written all over him. I led the bible study group in church and was included in his weekly email, where he emailed his sermon outline. ALARM bells were set ringing when he emailed the outline written in Hanguel Word!! The guy couldn't speak, read or write Korean, so how he managed to tabulate, include graphics etc in this document written on Korean software is beyond me. The Head Pastor soon caught on and CANNED HIS FAT AMERICAN ***. The guy taught English during the week and ministered on the sunday!! go figure!!
Let it be said, I am happily married, and have my white wife with me here!! Not looking for an easy lay. Just money to pay the monthly bills!

You have a couple different groups of "teachers". Many of the Hagwans hire students straight out of University regardless of the type of degree that they have. The lure is a tax free income for a year or two and a little something extra to add to thier resume. A good portion of these teachers have no teaching certificate, but the hagwan who hires them is to blame for this. The reasons for coming and for staying vary from person to person. They are usually young and a little wild and may or may not take thier teaching duties seriously.
The other group is the professional teachers you'll find working in Universities and High Schools and Foriegner Schools. Usually this kind of job requires a Masters in educations with ESL training. These positions are harder to get and are mainly manned by serious professionals.
This outlines why they came. So I don't think that most come to get pampered or laid. The heavy drinking culture and curiosity of many of the Korean girls are just extra perks or diversions. Depending on how you look at it. Again, I would lay the blame on the people running the hagwans for the quality of teachers they are bringing in. Of course some teachers may come just because they like asian women, but I don't think that is the majority.
By the way I lived in Seoul 10 years, not a loser, not a teacher.
I have a six figure income ,US dollars, now and while living in Seoul. Met a Korean girl in my second year in Seoul and we married. 1st to years before getting married I met many Korean girls and enjoyed thier company.

Well, I think it's because they like to travel and with their English skills, they are able to make a living out of it as well. Many people in Asia love to learn English and I feel the teachers also enjoy working in those Asian countries. I think that's all that matters. [;

Although they may not have a settled home back in the States, stable job, or sufficient money to make a good living, the teachers aren't "rejects." In fact, some I know are very hard-working and wise, in my opinion, since teaching English in Korea (such as in international schools) ensures a good pay, an environment change, and many times accommodation.

I wouldn't say they're "rejects," but the idea of traveling around the world to teach english appeals mainly to the sort of person who doesn't have a lot tying him to one place. That usually means no strong long-term relationships, no real estate, no significant property that needs to be maintained. Over here in America, those jobs are seen as sort of an adventure, and it takes a certain kind of person to be able to just pack up and go on an adventure. So far as their not being able to get laid, actually, they probably do just fine so long as they stick to their own social class.

I wouldn't say that....Some go to Asian countries purely because they want a change of environment etc. I guess there are a few bad sheep but generally the foreign English teachers in my country are rather up to standard.

I don't agree with you at all. Furthermore I would submit that anyone who posts a question like this is a frustrated lonely Korean guy blaming his lack of success with the ladies on a convenient scapegoat, rather than looking in the mirror and addressing the real reasons why women aren't interested in him and his kind. Try respecting women and treating them as equals sometime, then get back to us...
