Marlene, I get newsletters from RealAge and other health services. Regularly I read that we should be doing both. The weight training helps women maintain bone mass so we don't suffer from osteoporosis later in life. The cardio portion of training is to work out our hearts, and thus maintain good heart and lungs.

As long as you're doing a weight that isn't too difficult you should be okay.
Pick a weight that you can do 3 sets of 12-15 repetitions per set. Plus it's natural for your muscles to swell a little.
If you're doing a heavier weight that you can't lift at least 12 reps, then you're breaking down your muscles too much.
Remember, your goals is to tone your muscles while doing cardio to burn fat.
