I recently went to my parents' church, where I haven't been since I was 17 or so. That was far more uncomfortable than going to a new church for the first time. People I remember being born now married with families; some of their parents dead now; everyone who remembered me wanting to talk with me about the last 20 years; I was not at all at peace there.

Going alone when you don't know anyone is not so bad. It's easy to fade into the crowd and get a more objective impression of the church. If you feel comfortable with it, you can start getting to know people. And remember, it's not about the building, or the people, or anything else like that--it's if you personally feel that God is present while you're there.

Yes If I go alone and then the Pastor tells everyone to gather and pray in small groups-----what am I suppose to do, break into a small group of strangers who know each other? I tried that recently and I felt very uncomfortable. I don t want to go back to that church.

No, not really. The thing I have trouble with is I can't seem to concentrate on the sermon when it's with a new pastor/priest/minister when it's in new church. I lose my concentration too easily the first time 'round. :D

Who wouldn't be uncomfortable but if we all have the same spirit then we should feel right at home. Some do.

Not in the city. Small church in a small town, maybe. It would depend on if it was a unfamiliar denomination or one that I knew a lot about.

No - because I go to worship God and whether or not I know anyone, has no bearing on me attending.
