I'm from the UK and don't understand the whole Hershey's thing. To me, it tastes like very cheap chocolate with sherbert in the middle! Why do people like it so much?

Ah, Holland is better? I don't know, I find continental chocolate generally a bit too sweet. We have a great shop over here called Hotel Chocolat; it's amazing!

You are so right! It's all marketing and more marketing and a prime example of the abysmal lack of palate in the general american public Just pitiful. Plus the arrogance of our ignorance-it's better because we say so. Very crazy making. America is so vast, many of us get little or no exposure to alternatives from set belief systems. What seems to keep it intact is the nostalgia of childhood comfort foods, generation after generation. The only excuse I can offer is the youth of the nation. A few hundred years of dreaded assimilation vs. thousands of years of real culture.

If you think Hershey's is awful now - be advised it, Cadbury,
and other major American confection producers want to
delete expensive natural chocolate. Yes, lobby groups are
being paid as I write to change the law in the USA so their chemical factory substitution can be called 'chocolate'. The
customer will be asked to continue the chocolate price for
confections costing mere pennies in production because it
will be made in bulk for sale of former 'natural' goodies.
I'm told the new mix is "Wax-Like". It will be the next great
corporate scam. The real chocolate will still be made but not
for you or yours. Of course other substutions can now be made once chocolate isn'r really chocolate. Who's to know?

Hershey's is not aimed at upmarket gourmet chocolate connoisseurs. It's an everyday mass market brand that enjoyed by millions of people. It has a long heritage and comes from the days when ordinary folk had never tasted Belgian high cocoa solids style chocolate.
