I will not lie! yes, most Atheists are depressed! cynics who feel lost within themselves. though I am not one of them
I am an Atheist that is depressed, depressed, as in, without comfort.
I have always made it my goal to know as much as I can about life, I read, I take notice of other people and listen to their views and beliefs, I look at both sides and decide what's fact and what's fiction. A big part of me wants to believe in God, God as a, spiritual, guide through the reality of life, someone to turn to when the atrocities of the human race become to much to bare. I would like to bury myself in faith and live in the knowledge, that as a human being full of empathy, I will be one of the chosen few to make it in to heaven and take my place with the angels and saints.
the problem for me is that, as a collector of knowledge, I am forced to face the reality of the world, as it is. Common sense tells me that the chances of life after death are improbable, a fiction made up by the early Catholic church to make me pay for my sins while still her on earth, so that I might, through Purgatory, make it in to heaven. purgatory was used as a tactic to get, dieing, elders to leave all their money to the monks, who would then pray for their souls, in the hope that God would let them into heaven quicker. it is seen by the intelligent, that this was just a, religious, scam, that was put inplace to enhance the Popes coffers. the reformation of the English church in the 16thC, brought to light the true meaning of the christian church, one that would go to any length, to demand conformity, through whatever means. look at the history of the church, really, look. The origin of Catholicism/Chritians is based on fiction, blood, murder, rape, pillage and greed.
so to answer your question, you can tell an atheist through his depressed face, for he knows, that all there is in this world is US, and as a race, we have lost the true meaning of what it is to be human, empathy! empathy is what gives you soul ( for wantofa better word) it is what should drive us to better this planet for everyone, what should make us take note of all the plights of the forgotten people of this planet, that scociety have chosen to forget . theism is a theory, someone elses theory, someone elses idea that you live by, Atheist are cold, cold due to the realism of our knowledge.

What is this stereotype about the "angry atheist"?
When an atheist is confronted with the same wild claims and threats of hellfire over and over again, they will naturally be inclined to raise their voice. So would you if muslims came to your door every week trying to convert you or put pressure on you at work.
Atheists do not have a particular "look". We are from all walks of life, with a very wide range of personal and political opinions.

You ask them of course.
What a pity that this question has been used by the usual people for the usual cheap jibes and insults (including the questioner). Why can't you respect each others' beliefs? In the end neither position is provable and belief or disbelief in a god is simply a matter of faith.

if he or she has an axe to grind, its understandable for someone to be an agnostic, he or she just doesn't know if a God exists, but someone like Ted Turner who is an athiest has an axe to grind, turner doesn't believe there's a God because a God would not allow the suffering that occurs in the world....the first way to tell if a person is an athiest is to distinguish the person from an agnostic...an agnostic doesn't know if there's a God, an athiest absolutely believes there is no God

We are usually the quiet ones while religious folks express thier incredulous views. Like a parent talking to a child who is stating something you know to be incorrect but don't want to hurt their feelings, we just nod our heads and say, "ok."
to jamustrip: Athiests don't believe that any diety exists, so your suggestion of a 666 tattoo (Satinism) is completely incorrect.

I don't get red patches around my eyes.
You can't tell if someone is an Atheist, you have to find out by asking.

You can't by looking at them. It's not like they wear a sign around their neck proclaiming it. It's when they open their mouths and say they don't believe in God that you know.

How can you tell if a person is a religious bigot? They ask questions like this.
Another question that damages the image of Christianity. So are you a Christian that is just too naive to see the damage you do or a non Christian deliberately causing damage?
