There's a fine line between being taken advantage of at work, not working hard enough, and being lazy- how do you know where they are?

If you live in the USA, you live and work in a capitalistic society. Everyone has a product to sell. As an employee, your product is time, knowledge, and skill. The government puts a price on time, and that is the minimum wage. You acquire knowledge and skill through education and experience. You wage depends on the value of all three things.

You are now selling your product to the highest bidder. That bidder now owns your time, knowledge, and skills and has the right to do with it as he pleases. (The exceptions are being asked to do anything illegal or immoral or beyond your physical capabilities) If at any time, you decide that you do not want to sell your product because of what the employer wants to do with your product, you can decline to sell it.

It is not a question of how hard you work. It is a question of giving value to your company, just as you want value when you purchase food at the grocery store.

You should work the same way you are paid, for me it is a little bit twice a month. My brother always worked a little bit but only on Fridays, it was too much so he retired last week.
If you are paid a lot you should work hard but if you want to be paid more make sure your boss knows you are working hard to earn more money.
If you are working hard to earn more money and don't get more money you are being taken advantage of and you should quit.

Compare your work volume with the work volume of your colleagues.

Wish you all the best!
