First of all, I have no prejudice toward hispanics. About half the women I've dated are from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Spain.
I almost married my girlfriend from Spain.

There are hispanics who come here and assimilate, and those who clique-ishly live pretty much exclusively within their own spanish-speaking subculture, referring contemptuously to "gringos", oblivious to the fact that these same derisively-labelled gringos have opened their country to them, and given them the same education and career opportunities as any American citizen.
They bemoan racism while choosing not to assimilate, not to learn english, or socialize with Americans. I experienced this memorably at one party I attended with my girlfriend, where I was the only native-born American there , but I was treated as if I was the alien there, and not them.

A recent poll notes the remarkable openness of Americans to hispanics, and conversely, the remarkable hostility of Mexicans to white Americans:

In early 2006, Zogby international, in conjunction with a Mexican polling firm, did a survey of the attitudes of 1000 Americans and 1000 Mexicans.
Americans viewed Mexicans as positively, with 78% saying Mexicans were hardworking, and 44% seeing them as tolerant.

The Mexicans hold a remarkably different view of us.
"Mexicans think Americans are neither hard workers, nor honest", wrote the Zogby authors.
"They see them as racist, intolerant, and moderately law-abiding." Only one in six Mexicans thought Americans are honest, and and one in four said we are hardworking. While 62% said the United States is wealthier because we "exploit other people's wealth". Three out of every four Americans, 73%, said Americans were racists.

My point in raising this issue is: why do we continue to allow immigration from places, particularly Mexico, a majority of whom have a contempt for the United States government, its sovereignty, its culture, and ultimately and its people?
It would make sense to draw immigration from nations who think more favorably of us, and reject immigration from countries who undermine us.

I would argue that the white resentment they deal with is not blind prejudice toward hispanics, but specifically an earned and legitimate hostility toward a group of people (of any race, of any nationality) who are a quantifiable economic drain on our nation, who refuse to assimilate.

And then, in an act of TRUE racism, who sweepingly stereotype us, and blame us for their own lack of ambition.

(my response: )
First of all, I don't love Mexicans. They are by far the worst assimilating group of immigrants to the United States. They have a disproportionately large number of welfare recipients, criminals, prison inmates, and high school dropouts.

Second, this country welcomes over 1 MILLION legal immigrants per year. Mexicans do not have any right to illegally enter our country, and that is why we oppose them. The United States takes in more immigrants than pretty much the rest of the world's nations combined, and we have every right to decide who enters, based on our economic and internal security concerns.

Also, Wal-mart and similar corporate businesses are just as bad for the United States as they are for Mexico.

Thanks very much for your post. It's easy to get into sweepingly generalizing --or at least appear to by omission of mentioning them-- hispanics who are patriotic, fully assimilated and successful Americans who contribute greatly to our nation.

I dug up one of the columns by James Reza, who you mentioned.

Many do. Those with an agenda. Others are parrots. And, of course, there are some racists among all races.

Read:

-Richard Sepulveda's, "No Hablo Espanol: But I'm Still Latino, Dammit!"

-James Reza's, "Asleep at the Wheel" (dallasblog.com)

Y'know, Stiffler, the brick wall we all face in this argument is that most illegal Latino's don't even trust one another. Though they claim to, their actions speak louder than words.

If they trusted their own, they'd have long ago used that trust against these governments they despise. They would have built a nation like this. Or Japan or China or Germany.

Try this: Attend a party of mostly Indian nationals and ask yourself if you feel the same distrust you described above. Join in a crowd of Taiwan nationals and see if it's there. Same with Germans, Ethiopians, Nigerians, Portugese, Vietnamese and on and on.

Most societies under the shadow of historic Spain lack the vital self-introspection and interdependency we built our liberties on. They live devoid of it and don't know it. How could they? They've never tasted it.

Until you discuss this with You Don't Speak For Me (dontspeakforme.org), James Reza, Richard Sepulveda and the like; until you've surrounded yourself with true Americans of Latino descent who understand both the abyss and the path back to light, you'll send your legitimate questions into a chasm of confusion.

I've got news for you. If you were at a party and were the only native-born American there, then you WERE the alien. If you were the only guy in a room full of women, you would have been the "other." If you were the only high-school drop-out in a room full of college professors, you would have been "other." I lived on a Navajo reservation for a couple of years, when my dad worked for the BIA, and we were the minority. It was a fascinating experience.

Perhaps some hispanics manufacture allegations of "white racism." More of them do not, and are reacting to a real sense of resentment from some whites. Some whites manufacture allegations of "reverse discrimination," and more of them do not. The real trick is to have so much self confidence, you don't worry about what other people think of you, no matter your age, gender, creed, or the color of your skin. And that's something you can work on yourself, instead of trying to control anyone else.

You refer to 'Americans' as people of european descent. Did you forget that the US is actually less than 30% of the geographic North AMERICAN continent.

I would argue that the majority of 'Americans' view Mexicans as 'hard working' so long as it is to upkeep their gardens, clean up their crap or keep Walmart's prices so god damn low. As soon as the Mexicans move into the neighbourhood, i am sure that they would be fiithly immigrants bringing in crime and trying to steal the 'American' dream. If you loved Mexicans SOOOO much you would give illegals the same rights as you have and welcome fellow immigrants but you would rather have cheap merchandise and slave labour housekeeping.

I wonder how many illegals are threatened with deportation for asking for basic civil rights by the same people wh say they're hard working. Mexican's only get trapped in the US on their way to Canada where they are welcome, will be treated with respect, paid, at the least, the same minimum wage and given access to our healthcare.

In closing I say "No soy los Estados Unidos." (Sorry, my hispanic friends if I spelt that wrong but you know what I mean)

I think so. If you're not for open borders all the time, and don't support a mass flood of illegals coming here, they hold up a sign calling you a racist.

why did the "gringos" give us education and the same benifits like careers? om. r u forgetting that this nation was founded by immigrants? r u forgetting that its the gringos who crossed the whole ocean to get here and yet us hispanics are refered to as wet*backs for crossing a mostly dried up river? put urself in the hispanics situation. u c so many americans living life so simple and unaprieticative while these hispanics are struggling for food just to support their family. and yes i blame their government for this coruption. but one thing that i c within the hispanic cummunity is that they apprieciate EVERYTHING they have. they apprieciate their families and the little food that on their tables each day. and its nto only hispanics who suffer. other countries suffer the same way. and other countries live the same ungrateful way as americans. like some of europe for example. of course u were treated like and alien at that party. im sorry to say but us hispanics dont trust you. to us you are a spoiled american boy just like to u we are hispanics who are just after a better life.
