Navy Hospital Corpsmen do rotate between Fleet Marine Force units and other ships and stations, even though they have a Navy Enlisted Classification code of HM-8404 (Field Medicine). Corpsmen are permitted under the Laws of Land Warfare (also known as the Geneva conventions) to arm themselves in order to defend themselves and their patients. The type of weapon is not specified, though most are issued a side arm. I carried a .45 pistol. I believe the current side arm is a 9mm pistol. But, one could carry a rifle as well.
In peacetime, Navy corpsmen who are trained in field medicine are sometimes assigned to Fleet Marine Force units in garrison status. They continue to train with them and see to their injuries and illnesses. Other assignments can involve duty at Naval hospitals and station clinics. Some even become instructors at the two Field Medical Service Schools in California and North Carolina to train the next generation of Field Medicine personnel.
But, they are and will always remain Navy men and women. Members of the Navy Hospital Corps. And in their service with the Marines they have a chance to earn one of the highest terms of respect in the military: "Doc".

both services are part of the Dept of the Navy. A Navy Corpsman is just that - a member of the Navy. They may be attached to a Marine outfit as their medic, but they still hare a Navy Corpsman. I don't remember if the Marine Corp had a specific rating of a Corpsman or medic - I don't think they did.

an navy corpsmen is attached to the marine units they serve with. they are still Navy personel. when they are serving with a marine unit they live in baracks with the marine unit they serve.

on carrying a weapon, it depends they would not carry a m-16 or a saw unless they were serving with a recon unit. when i served in the USMC the corpsmen carried side arms. I am not sure if they were suppose to or not becuase medical helo's are not supposed to be armed as they are designated non-combatants. I am not sure if the same rule applied to them but they did carry side arms

also they serve roles in the navy also they might be assigned to duty with a navy unit.

desertviking is 100% on the money. We Marines LOVE our Corpsman. Their job is not to die for us, but to live for us. "Doc" is a term of endearment bestowed on those brave individuals willing to risk their lives "so others may live" Every Corpsman is "Doc" till someone gets hit, then it's "CORPSMAN UP" And they come running, they always come running, they never stop, they never quit, they will fight to the last for their Marines. God bless them all.

Bubba was bragging to his boss one day, "You know, I know everyone there is to know. Just name someone, anyone, and I know them." Tired of his boasting, his boss called his bluff, "OK, Bubba how about Tom Cruise?" "Sure, yes, Tom and I are old friends, and I can prove it." So Bubba and his boss fly out to Hollywood and knock on Tom Cruise's door, and sure enough, Tom Cruise, shouts, "Bubba! Great to see you! You and your friend come right in and join me for lunch!" Although impressed, Bubba's boss is still skeptical. After they leave Cruise's house, he tells Bubba that he thinks Bubba's knowing Cruise was just lucky. "No, no, just name anyone else," Bubba says. "President Clinton," his boss quickly retorts. "Yes," Bubba says, "I know him, let's fly out to Washington." And off they go. At the White House, Clinton spots Bubba on the tour and motions him and his boss over, saying, "Bubba, what a surprise, I was just on my way to a meeting, but you and your friend come on in and let's have a cup of coffee first and catch up." Well, the boss is very shaken by now, but still not totally convinced. After they leave the White house grounds, he expresses his doubts to Bubba, who again implores him to name anyone else. "The Pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says Bubba. "My folks are from Poland, and I've known the Pope a long time." So off they fly to Rome. Bubba and his boss are assembled with the masses in Vatican Square when Bubba says, "This will never work. I can't catch the Pope's eye among all these people. Tell you what, I know all the guards so let me just go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the Pope." and he disappears into the crowd headed toward the Vatican. Sure enough, half an hour later Bubba emerges with the Pope on the balcony. But by the time Bubba returns, he finds that his boss has had a heart attack and is surrounded by paramedics. Working his way to his boss' side, Bubba asks him, "What happened?" His boss looks up and says, "I was doing fine until you and the Pope came out on the balcony and the man next to me said, "Who's that on the balcony with Bubba?"
