Pictures like that have been ruined for me because my astronomy professor, who worked at NASA for a long time, told my class once that most of those pictures are doctored to be more colorful, though probably to show depth and not just for the sake of being pretty. And then the ones that aren't doctored are usually photographed in X-ray or one of the other non-visible wavelengths, so if you were to see it in person, it wouldn't be near that pretty, sadly.

That is a region of the Eagle Nebula (M16), which has been nicknamed 'The Pillars of Creation'. It is an image of a 'stellar nursery'... a region of gas and dust tens of light-years in size, in which new stars and solar systems are being born. The longest 'pillar' is about 4 light-years in length.

That may be the Horse Head Nebula from an angle I've never seen a photo taken from before. Probably isn't, though.

It's called the Omega Nebula yes it is a beautiful picture..

It makes me think of a storm tossed ocean at sunset..

Reminds me I need to fix the lens of me scope as I am going out to the desert to watch the meteor shower tomorrow, and perhaps some various and sundry heavenly bodies... Yup with muh wife.
