i'm sure. they probably offer clicker training and wanted you to sign up. i hope you don't get any other pet advice from a petstore. that said it can be effective to some point, although personally i would never use it. the way it works is you give a command click the clicker and when the dog does what you ask you give a reward, once they learn to associate the click with a reward they are supposed to respond with the clicker alone. problem being what do you do when you don't have a clicker. i would reccomend, since you have a very intelligent breed of dog finding a obedience class that works toward praise only results and one as far away from the petstore as possible. good luck, your pup is at a great age to start in an obedience class and if you follow the instuctors training with your dog the shepherd should do exceptionally well!

An excerpt from this site http://www.clickertraining.com
"Clicker training" is an animal training method based on behavioral psychology that relies on marking desirable behavior and rewarding it.
Desirable behavior is usually marked by using a "clicker," a mechanical device that makes a short, distinct "click" sound which tells the animal exactly when they're doing the right thing. This clear form of communication, combined with positive reinforcement, is an effective, safe, and humane way to teach any animal any behavior that it is physically and mentally capable of doing.
Check out the website for more information.
The click isn't a cue, it is a reward. First step is you get your dog to associate the clicker with a reward. You click, give a treat, click give a treat. It makes the connection that Hey my person clicks, I get a treat.
Then you start clicking behaviors. You don't have to ask for the behavior, just wait for it to happen. So you see your dog sit, click, treat. You can even work your dog from a distance. Once he figures out that doing things gets you to click, he'll be offering more and more behaviors to see what gets you to click.
Once the dog knows the behavior the click is phased out only used occassionally as a reinforcer.
Its a great method, look into it, you and your shepherd will enjoy training this way, and you'll be amazed at what he can learn, and what behaviors he comes up with that are really neat. Just don't click things you don't want him to repeat.

Clicker training is great. You get the clicker (i don't know where, you could order it or buy it from some pet store) and use it instead of saying yes. So if you say "Sit!" and your dog sits, you click immediately afterwords and give them a treat. The clicker sound means the dog did something right, and the dog knows it gets a treat when it hears it. My dogs go crazy every time they hear a clicker!!! It is great. Good luck!
