hospitals are hardly sanitary. we do try but there are some very unpleasant things contained in them to be polite.

the housekeeping dept. uses professional cleaners that are designed for commercial medical use. they have fragrances added to mask the very foul odors that are often in hospitals. phenol isn't used as any more. the er and the lab favors clorox at 10% dilution.

what you are smelling is probably housekeeping cleaners.

I love it. Who said hospitals are sanitary? 7 years of working in an ER tells me otherwise. It's the most dirty and filthy place you can go to. I agree with the med tech. ...he's in the lab though (which is dirty), i invite him to the ER which is disgusting! lol It's all good though. Ya, it's probably the detergents that the house keepers use.

My favorite hospital smell resembled the old red bar of Lifebuoy soap. I think it was a mixture of perfumes and carbolic acid (phenol). Unfortunately it is not used anymore.

It might just be the lack of smell. Hospitals have to be extremely sanitary, so the air is probably cleaner.
