The rod should be tall to keep line over breaking surf. If you are expecting blues, you might need a wire leader. Have some cut pieces of pvc pipe to drive into the sand to hold your bottom rigs. You might take a smaller one to cast jures like the gotcha-plug or soft plastics while you wait on the tight lines to bend. I go beforehand and net-catch small pinfish to use as cutbait. They are easily found near pilings along the shore and will bite a booger-sized piece of squid on a tiny hook. Keep them cold, and get new bait after several hours. Dont forget:
sunblock
insect repellent
fillet knife
lantern and flashlights
munchies
me
Wait till night if you can to avoid swimmers.

hi there nice to see that u want to fish with the family firstly u will need a long rod for surf fishing 12 foot and longer try yo call the local tackle shop to the area u are going to fish to find out what bait is best for the area if u can also get some roling leads as this will cover more ground and help u find the fish lures are not very good for surf fishing but that is choice do not for get your rod rest u dont want to be standing there all day waiting for a bite holding your rod good luck

This is not a complete list but, will be things you might consider having.
Bait- shrimp, bloodworms (nightcrawlers work just as well and don't cost near as much) and menhaden
Lures I never really use but, I take a couple of silver and gold slabs and a couple of "torpedo" type cigar lures( can't recall the name right now)
Anything else: a cooler with ice to keep your bait from spoiling, a bucket of clean water (non saltwater) to dunk your rod in if it falls into the sand are surf, a couple of rags to wipe the sunscreen and bait off your hands before and after baiting your hook. And PLENTY of drinking WATER. Good luck and tight lines. Someone already mentioned sand spikes and longer rods.

Sand spike. You're going to need to spike your fishing rod when you either bait the hook or wait for a fish to knock. As far as bait use cut chunks of either mackerel, bunker (menhaden) or herring. Or whole salted skimmer clams.
