It's just a simple vacuum pump with a drain to get rid of the spit. It's got adjustable pressure to avoid hurting the patient and a special nozzle that's soft and flexible to prevent scratching of the gums.

Well, actually it's an HVE [high volume evacuator]. It's hooked up to a big machine located remotely which is a big vacuum. It sucks everything through a filter and then down the drain to the sewer. The saliva ejector, if used, is also hooked up to this line. And NO, your tongue can't get stuck in it!

There are 2 suck things. The one that hangs over your bottom lip is called a low volume evacuator, usually called saliva ejector. The one held by the dental assistant is a high volume evacuator, usually called suction.

Its called an aspirator, it just sucks like a vacum to keep your mouth dry .
