Probably an allergic reaction. West Nile would make you sick other ways other than a swollen foot. Use rubbing alcohol or witch hazel on her foot and maybe take some Benadryl for the allergic reaction.

The West Nile Virus causes encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain. It typically does not have a reaction at the site of the bite, and it has many other symptoms. Most of them are flu like symptoms with a major headache. If she does not have any of those, it is most likely not West Nile. She should use a topical medication like Hydrocortisone on the bite to relieve itching and ice compressions to bring down the swelling. Good Luck!

BTW.. if you are not sure that it was a mosquito, the redness and swelling should start to move up the leg or she develops shortness of breath then she needs to see a physician. Those could be signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Mosquito bites can vary. Depending the mosquito that bite her. I live in a tropical country and there are so many types of mosquitoes from striped mosquitoes, to jungle mosquitoes and also tropical mosquitoes with especially large body.

So, if you want to know more about it. Do a google search on the mosquitoes bites. Due to the fact that the mosquitoes bites can vary in infections too. If she is getting feverish type of symptoms, then straight take her to the doctor to get it checked out as this might lead to west nile virus or even other types of virus infections. Take more precautions on her treatments where the wrong medicines would give a chain reaction to infecting her immune system.

Hope that this information helped a little.

OK as her if it itches, tell her to stop scratching, put some ointment on it for the itching, take some benadryll, and it might take a few day to go away, due to the shoe rubbing that area etc.. So when she is able, go bare foot for awhile.
If it keeps getting bigger in a few days, then go see the doctor. Drawl a circle around the area in ink, and see if the redness is going down, this way you will have more of a clue... Good Luck and just watch to see if she's getting sick or have flu like symptoms...

I think west nile gives you flu like symptoms, not really physical symptoms, so it's probably just a allergic reaction. But if it stays swollen for a long period of time take her to the doctor.

She's allergic to mosquito bites ... the symptoms of West Nile Virus are very similar to the 'flu' and not 'swelling' ... have your girlfriend take an antihistamine and the swelling should go down ... I am allergic to them, and I take anithistamines and they do 'help' a lot.

It might not actually be a misquito bite. It might be like a spider bite. If its there for like more than 2-3 days i would go to a doctor to get it checked out.

It's nothing you should worry about, I don't think. At least not West Nile.

Quote CDC:
It is estimated that about 20% of people who become infected with WNV will develop West Nile fever. Symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands.

its likely localised reaction. I have noticed I have more pain and swelling from insect bites if I get bit on my feet. Have her try some ice and benedryl. I wouldn't worry about west nile right now. If she gets a fever or infection then she sould see a doc otherwise she just needs to keep it clean and let it heal.
