WOW! You are a very special person to already be thinking about adopting. It is ok to not know where you want to adopt. You will know when the time comes and the opportunity becomes available. Just be open.

I read a quote that went something like this:

You must have loved your child a lot in your past life to have found them in your present life. This is a Buddhist saying – I did it from memory but you get the just of what I am saying. I am not a Buddhist but truly believe you are drawn to where you feel your child is.

When I was 16 I watched a program on children in Russia and it changed my life. I knew from that moment on that I was going to adopt.

Twenty years later my husband and I adopted from China. We are in the process of adopting a second daughter from China. We knew from the start that our daughter was in China.

Thanks for sharing your story.

There are a lot of great kids in our country, but there are a lot of kids everywhere that need someone to love and care for them.

A friend adopted a pair of brothers whose mother was killed in a fire from an orphanage somewhere in Russia. They were young, but not babies, but they learned English quickly and they are a great family now.

You will always get opinions (good and bad) from people when you do things outside the norm (though I'm thinking that your GSL might simply have been adding more options rather than criticizing), but if you trust your moral compass (do what is right, and not just what feels good), you will make good decisions - and there are a wide wide range of good decisions in adopting. So you can find what works for you and your future husband together. Good luck, I'll bet your parents are proud.

children are children, regardless of where they are from. There are children EVERYWHERE that need your love, and yes that includes in the USA. But choosing to adopt internationally is okay, too. Either way, it's giving hope to a child who didn't have it before, and cutting back on the number of children all over the world who have no family to care for them. Don't listen to your scout leader. Every child is in equal need of a family, regardless of whether they're in the USA or anywhere else!

A man that I used to work with adopted three children from South East Asia. He and the wife made the trip. They were very excited and love the children.
A lady that I used to go out with wanted to adopt a baby in NJ but it never happened. She did not meet the income criteria.
Good luck to you

Get them from America. It's all the rage to adopt children from other countries, especially third-world ones, but there are so many children here that need homes. It also makes it easier for the adopted child to contact their birth parents later in life.

Any where your heart leads you, after researching and making sure the country has ethical adoptions, without exploiting birthmothers, and determining that the agency you choose with is reputable.

Both are amazing and extremely generous. It will really depend on how you feel once you're old enough and ready to do it.
