We weren't created out of nothing, we were created from parts of our mother and father, and when we die we aren't nothing, we are food for the bugs, and dirt! But the real question is Where does the energy that makes us run go? Is it a spirit? If so what does a spirit consist of? Obviously its not just your attitude or personality because that changes if you get damage to the brain, and if it is not your attitude, or personality, what makes one "soul" different from the next?Hmm... I don't know if I'm making sense anymore :) Do you really think that we are just nothing after we die? Thats kind of depressing. I hope we get reincarnated.

Our mind is our soul. When we die, our mind dies, and therefore our soul dies. It's sad, but that's reality. Even if we got reincarnated, we wouldn't know.

Energy in the spiritual sense, goes nowhere. It's non-existent. The soul, and all of it's variations, is nothing more than a human construct. The supernatural simply doesn't exist.

Either way...death is the end. It's not that depressing. If anything, it's the reason that I enjoy life the way I do. It's the only one I'll have.

The energy that makes us go is electrical and chemical. The reactions shut down and what is left dissipates into the air through convection. There have been some fairly complex calorimeter tests looking for any other energy leaving, and it just isn't there.

There is no such thing as a "soul" You may find that depressing, but it is the only thing that the evidence points to.

Nope. No soul/spirit, no reincarnation. The energy that makes us run comes from the body burning calories.

I often use soul as a metaphor, to describe my tastes, my loves, my desires, my passions. But as far as anything super natural or extra worldly - nada.

Honey, first you have a very wrong definition of energy. It is merely the ability to do work. When you die, you will no longer produce energy.
I an afraid you have a creationist idea of what energy is and that idea is wrong.

We were created from stardust...no really we were.

The energy that makes up our mass will continue to exist after our deaths. But only as energy in a different form.

Our 'soul' is merely our ego. It will cease to exist.

Let me jump to the end of your "question" -

It doesn't matter if reality is depressing or if we hope that there is a "prettier" explanation for the universe. Reality just is. If you are an atheist you need to think about that.

I think a good way to imagine what life will be like after we die is to imagine what life was like before we were born. Absolutely nothing.

Whatever applies to us applies to all living things so does that mean that ants and trees have spirits.
Nobody knows the answers to these questions, our brains are insufficiently developed so we invent gods and demons to fill in the gaps.
