Are they really the same? V-Lux 1 is $500 more than DMC-FZ50, can some professionals tell me if this is a rip off?

Thanks...

The bottom line: Leica's version of Panasonic's DMC-FZ50 has slightly better JPEG compression, slightly slower performance, and a much higher price tag.

Once upon a time Leica was an excellent camera company. Their lenses were legendary and the cameras were rugged. In recent years they have bought technology from others and put their name on.

This actually started about 1972 when Leica paid Minolta for use of the Minolta XE-7 (Leitz worked with Copal to design the shutter for the XE-7/R-3) and called it the Leica R-3. Minolta built the camera with a Leica lens mount and metering system. Leica also used Minolta's 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens and Minolta's 35-70mm f3.5 and 70-210mm f4 constant aperture zoom lenses. Go to ebay and compare prices for the Minolta version vs. the Leica version of these lenses.

Save your $500 for accessories and go with the DMC FZ50

i in my opinion does not agree that the Leica is properly worth greater. i think of the mark-up is due totally to its call. The cameras do have distinctive processing engines, and the Panasonic has performed a sprint greater suited on tests interior the united kingdom than the Leica.
