I just got a 3 month old Bull Terrier mix today and I have been trying to introduce him to my 3 year old cat. The cat seems to stand his ground and growl at the puppy when he comes near which is understandbale because the puppy wants to jump at and play with the cat. He has also barked at him a few times and I immediately told him no each time. If the cat tries to run, the dog instinctively wants to chase him. Any suggestions on how I can get the puppy to just ignore the cat? Is there a chance that they will ever be friends?

Okay at first they will not like each other and might fight when they are around and the cat might hiss and growl and the puppy might take it as the cat is playing at first but then the puppy will get the hint all you can do is leave them in the same area and let them get used to each other on there own time for example i just got a chiuahaha and i have i cat and she is so used to having my house to herself and when she seen i had a dog for like the first week they faught and now they get along just fine every now and then they fight but other then that they get along just fine they clean each other i also have 5 other cats and they liked my dog the minute he got here so it will take a little bit of time.

My cat is use to be around dogs so what I was afraid of is that my Mother's dog is a Dobie and German Shepard mix and I was not sure how the dog would react to my cat . So what I did was I had the door closed to my bedroom and I let the dog sniff under the door at the cat and I did that for a week and then what I did is that I had my Mother hold her dog and then I held my cat and she smelled the dog and the dog smelled the cat and I saw that they would be ok because I was concerned because the dog was mixed breed and I was scared that the dog would attack the cat . The dog will walk into my room and they will rub noses and then the dog will leave and then the cat will look up at me and it looks like she is trying to tell me "What was that all about". My cat and the dog will get along very well with no problem. I hope this will help. good Luck.

Your cat is not old at 3 years old.
But I'm sure your cat would rather be left alone then have to deal with a 3 month old puppy that doesn't have any brains yet.

Best action to take is not to let your puppy antagonize your cat. When your cat has had enough of him, the cat will scratch the hell out of your puppies nose to teach him a lesson or two. Your puppy will eventually learn the ropes and leave the cat alone.

Good luck

hi, u can introduce ur new dog to the other cats that r all ready living there as long as its a puppy. the puppy will learn its place in the family. also share ur time around with all the animals so they dont feel left out when the new arrival comes. a another suggestion is to prodive ur cats a safe haven away from the dog. like some where high. that way the cats will safe there away from the dog. my parents had a chihuahua when they had 3 cats and duck before the dog arrived. the dog settled in alright

It is much easier to introduce a kitten to a dog than a puppy to a cat. You're going to need time, time, time! Don't punish the cat for repremanding the puppy - it is his house & the puppy will need to be put in his place (unless the cat is just attacking the puppy for no reason). I would suggest getting a squirt bottle & keeping it full at all times. A stream of water can reach the puppy and/or cat alot faster than you can & is usually more effective.

does the cat attack the dog? If so try to spray her with a very very small water gun or just punish the cat. if not they will turn out to be friends because the dog will learn that the cat hates being chased. (i had this problem so many times) Also if the cat still tries to attack him when your gone or not there with them try to seperate them in different rooms

Let puppy find out from kitty why we don't agravate kitty! Let them interact on their own terms. You can't force their freindship. But on the other hand they could just become busom buddies! Just stand back and watch and let them learn each others bounderies, from each other!
