As a matter of etiquette, they should keep their facial expressions to themselves, especially when their store "deals" with such materials. However, as a personal response, many people cannot help the automatic reactions they feel towards such materials. It's almost like a knee-jerk reaction, and they cannot help it. A truly polite customer would be ignoring their reaction, pay for the materials, and exit the store quietly.

It depends on the magazine and the clerk. If you buy Playboy, about 10% of clerks know that is not disgusting porn. The rest of the magazines are and they know it.
There's also the stigma attached to perusers of porn these days that did not exist a generation ago. People who view porn now are 90% more likely to be child molesters than those men in my generation. It isn't seen as harmless any more.
