Harry Potter is a controversial book because it has magic in it. Some religious organizations have a problem with this. The reason that there is such a big deal made about Harry Potter versus religion is because the book sells so well and the media knows that it can get a lot of attention if they play up the controversy. If nobody had ever heard of the Harry Potter book series nobody would hear about the 'controversy' surrounding it either.

The big deal isn't that some Christians aren't letting their kids read the books. It isn't anyone's concern what parents privately allow their kids to read.
However, we come to a problem when those people feel compelled to keep other children from reading the Harry Potter books. Its quite well known that many Christian groups have spent a lot of time and money trying to convince the general, non-fundamentalist population, to either outright ban, limit the availability of, or at least prohibit THEIR kids from reading, the Harry Potter books.
Its gone so far that videos, pamphlets, TV shows and books have been put out by fundamentalist Christians to try to stop others from reading the books.
So, you're right, its not a big deal if some people decide that THEIR children won't be allowed to read HP. It is however a big deal when they attack the books, the author, anyone that distributes them or makes them available and try to keep MY children from reading them.

Nothing wrong with Harry Potter. It's just a book and kids know the difference between novels and the Bible.

The Harry Potter books are very well written and have good stories. They have got a lot of children who otherwise would not read - reading.
It is only a few extremists who want to stop the books

I agree, at least these children are wanting to read, ever since video games became so popular, kids don't want to do anything anymore, but with the reading that they are wanting to do right now at a young age will be better for them in the long run, especially when they get to be senior citizens, it can help to prevent people losing their minds

People sure wouldn't wait in line for 48 hours to get a Bible now would they? And it has more interesting, useful, and FACTUAL stories in it that some story about witches and wizards. I'm not gonna say for other's to not allow their kids to read it but I'll let them konw what I think about it.

Yet they fawn over the Narnia books even though they have all the same elements in them (witches, magic etc.).
