The purpose driven church and its message of numbers.
Oh now, let's not talk about hell. Lets have rock musicians in and get the sinner in church and then we'll convert them............BUNK.
Great question. I hope it wakes a few of us up so that we may seek the old paths, where is the good way.

You can not turn away from sin. You are a sinner for life (1 John 1: 7 - 10) but God will remember your sins no more (Hebrews 10:17). If you believe in Jesus his blood covers all of your sins: past, present and future. If not, then Jesus died in vain. We are not under the 10 commandments by the believe in him (Luke 24: 44) and that he nailed it to the cross (Colossi ans 2:14). As far as being baptized by water. Jesus was baptized by John and in Mathews 3:15 he says “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” If you study that statement, you find that only Jesus can only full fill all righteousness, we can not. We are only righteous through him and Jesus finished everything for us. When Jesus died is when the Holy spirit was allowed to dwell within us. In Acts 2:38, they are still baptizing with water until Paul was baptized by the Holy spirit in Acts 9: 17 - 18. Paul receives the Holy spirit and in Acts 19: 1 - 10, he asks the disciples if they were baptized in the holy spirit and they said they were not and Paul laid hands on them and they received the holy spirit.
So to answer your question about repentance, it is not necessary, because Jesus is our sacrificial lamb, that by our faith in him and our obedience we our saved by grace, otherwise he died on the cross in vain.

This is the most moving question I have seen here for days and days!
I noticed the move from this to the more watered down versions of telling each other how good we are several years ago....
It seems to have gone by the wayside from fear of offending the congregation, the neighborhood, and being in line with the desires of the secular world. I am saddened greatly by its passing. Christians are being taught they can expose themselves to, and embrace just about anything and still be a Christian, just because God forgives us.
In reality, Christianity is like most things, there is a trade off involved. To receive forgiveness, you must turn away from your wrongdoing.
I don't want a pastor to tell me how good I am, but rather what I need to change! Oh yes, a God fearing, hellfire and brimstone, bring the house down preacher is a gift from God Himself. If you are blessed to have one, keep him in your house!

Any parent knows that the effective way to change behavior is to reward the behavior you want repeated, and ignore the one you don't. Repentance as you describe it will only result in a temporary change.
Punishment, embarassment, guilt and shame DO NOT help people to change for the better.

It is the T.V. preacher's that have made it as though we need or have to buy GOD'S inspired word and pay for prayers. They have turned the opportunity for salvation into a market place.
Matthew 21:12-14
12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
Jesus said;
Matthew 10:7-9 (7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
Romans 8:31-33 (31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

I think maybe people gave it a bad name. I had an uncle who made a regular habit of going out and doing all kinds of bad things and then repenting but then repeating the same habits like he never had any regrets or shame.

I think it went out of style when people became too lazy...people don't want to have to work for their salvation so they came up with a new doctrine: no repentance required! Just say a prayer and you're saved forever. Apparently that belief is quite popular nowadays along with pick-your-own-doctrines christianity...
Christ's Gospel is called The Gospel of Repentance. It is one of the most important things He taught - it is how His Atonement becomes active and real to a person. The christian world in general has lost a great truth when crying repentance became out of style.
Give me good old fashioned Apostolic preaching, I say...

To repent is to turn away from sin.
The word says not to dwell on the things of the past.
We are called to look to the mighty throne of God.
Meet him at the cross, move on to a throne relationship.
Blessings to you!

Most people like "feel good" preaching. They don't want "straight truth" because it makes them uncomfortable. They have to look at themselves and may need to make a few changes. They fear conviction as they would not be able to continue in their sin. BROAD is the way that leads to destruction! ....and that "broad" way is an easy ride...it FEELS GOOD!
