Probably because those are the most dramatic things about the disorders, the things you'd notice first.
People tend to simplify things- and lots of people talk big big big about things they don't know very much about! The reverse of that is, it's amazing how much people will believe you, if you just sound confident enough! I find it both kind of funny and kinda scary...
PS- multiple personality and schizophrenia are totally different things!

Not all people with Tourette's do curse. As the other person stated, the number is about 10%. Now, the brain causes you to do these tics involuntarily. I think for these people, the brain just attached to this action rather than another action. I don't think people can really tell you why they have one tic versus another. I think the main thing happening is that there is the "signal" to have a tic and then they happen. I have Tourettes. I have not cursed before. With that said, I've done other things. I've done, chirping, twitching, yelling, shouting some non words, physical movements are actually the worst because they can wear you out and give you muscle cramps and aches. Have you ever had a "charlei horse" in your neck? I have and it's not fun! Generally, the amount of tic or the intensity mirrors the amount of either anxiety or energy that I'm containing at any given time. At one point in time, the tic will change and "attach" to something new and I will have a new "normal tic." I think what I do is somewhat random as far as I can tell. Perhaps this is helpful

Only people that have truly suffered from the disorders mentioned above or who have had loved ones with the disorders know what they are really like. People make things up and don't really know what the true meaning is. If they took the time to get some literature on the disorders they might actually know what the people are going through. It is not as simple minded as it seems to be.

yeah its called stereotypical....like everything i suppose. i have a friend who has tourettes but not the verbal. People who are uneducated in this field use these stereotypics to get their point across or on occasions ridicule.....its like diabetes....is all about not being able to eat sweeets.....its like with most things but its only brought to peoples attention when they are in the situation themselves.
good question:)
