Have you ever considered that "the American dream" is full of crap? The American dream is essentially live in debt and consume so the top 1% can have it all.
Home ownership, college education, a new car every two years--all crap to keep you in debt and an indentured servant stuck in your soul-crushing cube job. You do all of this only to come home to a wife you settled for and kids that will grow up to hate you and use your money to go to a shrink and sort out exactly why you suck becuase we are the generation of existential questions left unanswered.
New cars are a ripoff (lose money when you drive them off a lot), home ownership is a ball and chain (you trade rent for property tax and a never ending assortment of weekends fixing the dump); and college is the biggest rip-off of all (there isn't an institution in this country that doesn't boil down to a diploma mill, especially the schools that middle American cube fodder find themself in).
If the American dream wasn't a nightmare why would we need drugs to cope (look at the stats and see that most of the American workforce is either on drugs or doesn't consider their wine and Prozac to be medication). If the American dream wasn't a nightmare why are soccer moms blowing their nest eggs in river boat casinos? Why are 20 somethings spending their youth in noisy halls drinking overpriced alcoholic soda pops till they go numb, all in the name of living for the weekends because the waking death that is Monday is coming? Why does one heart attack mean the game is over (health problems are the leading cause of bankruptcy)? Why are pensions a thing of the past? Why is every other commercial about getting it up or chilling you out? Why are we so fat? Because we are trying to fill the void with what we can grab out our car windows, and that's usually fast food--because we can't cope with the American dream fulfilled!
The American dream wins by default because the rest of the world lives in misery, or so we've been told. The American dream is a lottery ticket no one gets to cash in. The American dream has always been a lie.
It's time for a new American dream that doesn't require consumer debt. A new dream that doesn't allow racism to lie just beneath the surface. A new dream that allows for some semblance of equity. We live in the era of capitalism run amok--we need a capitalism that allows competition and makes the American dream more than a poorly conceived pipe dream.
In lieu of that, I offer a real American dream. Rent an apartment, drive a nice used car, go to college as a lark, or better yet travel (a lot), don't buy status crap you don't need; meet people, love people--live! And die broke with a smile on your face.
As for illegals, it's all BS. This country couldn't run without Mexican day labor because American's don't want to do those jobs for a price that allows fat cats to stay obese. In Chicago, sales tax in the poorest Mexican 'hoods trumps that of the mag mile. Mexicans are good for this economy, and a great scapegoat for why the American dream isn't what we thought it would be.

Illegals have not ruined the American dream. Illegal aliens are a scape goat for problems that run much deeper in American government and politics. Corporate interests have decimated the middle class by effectively lobbying politicians from both major parties into trade agreements that allow the corporations and thus a select few executives to have enough wealth to participate in the pay to play system currently operating in Washington D.C.to sell out the American production workers. Illegals come to America, do the jobs that no Americans want and send the money home to relatives end of story. Now conservatives will say that illegals are the most evil thing because supposedly the illegals help terrorists. In my most humble of opinions this is hooey. Conservatives don't really give a darn about illegals, infact most of their maids and butlers are likely to be illegals. The conservatives do however want votes, thus they depict illegal aliens as the enemy of the American workers (rather than admitting it was their greedy foreign trade policies)and vow to stop the illegal imigrant menace. as if the well paying production jobs that were outsourced to china and such will come back when America puts up a 400 mile ling fence along our southern border. You'd do well to listen to NPR news between 6&10 am and 2-5pm on weekdays they do a good job of objectively presenting news with out a liberal or conservative slant. I sincerely hope this helped a bit.

Congrats on your great grades! That is quite an accomplishment. I think the thought is that the "American dream" of our forefathers- is being challenged. The thought is that the language (predominantly Spanish) and, the economic limitations of the undocumented place a strain on the economy of the USA. Also, people that live in areas with higher immigrant populations have more issues realizing the "american dream" because the immigrant culture becomes dominant in that area, and, in the case of most undocumented, the culture is very different from ours. If you are suddenly only around Spanish speakers, and, have your mom & pop restaurant/ store closed to open a menudo/panaderia store, I think it offends people's ideas of the "American Dream".
however, you obtaining your dream will depend upon what your personal dream is. You obviously are intelligent, so, I am confident that you will figure that out in time.
Best wishes!

anybody can achieve the American dream in whatever way they want to.
If some keep crying about illegal immigration, then that will affect how they do in life, because they take the issue to another level, a hardcore/ obsessive level.

So, will you be "achieving the American dream" while living in England or Japan?! hahaha...I lived in Japan for 2 years, by the way, not that great! Just take a vacation there, you won't like living there - they are more racist against latinos/latinas than white Americans are.
As for your question, illegals sure make it hard to walk through Wal Mart! Feel free to move out of my way!

Only up to you to achieve? Are you and you alone paying the costs to go to college? Will you work part time to pay for college? Will you have to compete for part time work to pay for college with illegals? If only illegals are being hired at low skilled jobs then how would you earn money to pay for college? Not every American can afford to go to college they have to work some place. Where will your generation work if millions of illegals keep filling jobs?

i'm not sure about ruining the american dream, doesn't quite make sense to me. but illegal is still illegal. legal immigrants should tell illegal immigrants to do it right the first time, instead of wanting special previleges for them. such as automatic citizenship. if it is okay to do one thing illegally, what other illegal activities are okay? so many mexican immigrants don't want to be americans of mexican descent, they want to be mexicans living in america, but remain loyal to mexico. so many people from other countries want to be americans and work hard to become citizens. they love, respect and honor the american way of life. they still love their former countries, but honor their new country. it should be this way for any immigrant from mexico as well.

the illegals have not ruined the american dream, our government has by allowing all this stuff to happen. big companys have taken advantage of cheap labor, and will continue to do so. the illegals are actually living the american dream, they are doing exactly what the forefathers of this country did. find a better place to live. pretty simple.

Well...lets see...
1. The presence of additional consumers drives up prices of housing, goods, groceries, and services--"supply and demand".
2. The presence of additional people needing housing means that green areas are leveled and replaced with dense, environmentally damaging housing.
3. The presence of large numbers of people willing to perform low paid labor brings down wages in the market--why pay more when you don't have to.
4. The presence of large numbers of people willing to work under poor conditions makes it impossible to work for changes to get better working conditions.
5. Illegal, underpaid, uninsured immigrants often go to our hospitals, then do not pay for services and medicines--driving up hospital charges, and therefore insurance rates, while reducing access to hospitals to those of us who DO pay for them.
6. There is a tendency for illegal immigrants (and a lot of legal ones, too) in the US to lie about people and cause them to be sacked when the immigrant doesn't get what they want...even if the request is unethical, illegal, or just impossible. I personally lost my job, my home, and my car because of a liar who wanted a job that my company did not have open--and I was polite to her.
7. Immigrants often use servies such as Medicaid/Medicare, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, TAP and Pell, and other financial programs intended for Americans, and which the immigrants and their families have not paid into. This uses up this money and reduces the number of born Americans who can get it when needed.
So, how do immigrants in general, and illegals in particular, ruin the American Dream...
a. They keep wages down and working conditions poor.
b. They drive prices up.
c. They invalidate the hard work of honest Americans who were born here.
d. They limit or reduce the access of Americans to the services that are provided by our own taxes and labor.
