What counts:
Physical Challenge
Competition
What doesn't count:
Mental Challenge
Losing Weight
Environment difficulties
Why Doesn't it count:
Mental Challenge: It is pretty hard to concentrate for that long, but we don't consider gamers a sport.
Losing Weight: Yes, you loss a lot of weight during a race because of how much they sweat. I am a wrestler and we constantly checks our weight. From my experience, I know that you can loss weight just by sitting and do nothing. Its because of their clothing, it acts like a sweat pants and jacket.
Environment difficulties: Its their own fault driving in summer heat, why don't they switch it to winter. People are considering the heat like they must drive in it.
What counts:
Physical Challenge....ummm don't think so unless you count moving those steering wheels physical
Competition, there is competition in any racing
so i ask my friends, "why do you like nascar?"
Answer: awesome crashes, drunk girls, and beer.
AWESOME!

By even asking this question you are proving that you know nothing about auto racing or maybe even sports in general.
What does it take to make someone an athlete? Training? Skill? Competition? All that and more.
People who hate auto racing always say the same thing. "It's just driving a car in circles." But they always seem to leave out the fact that the car is going 200 miles per hour, its over 100 degrees in the car and that there are 40 other guys trying to get to the front at the same time. It takes an amazing amount of reflexes, spacial awareness, skill and training to drive a car at 200 miles per hour.
Dictionary.com says that a sport is "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature..." OK. If you can't see the fact that driving a 750 horse power car for 500 miles within inches of 40 other drivers takes "skill or physical prowess" then you will never be swayed by any argument made on the internet. But if you've been there, in victory lane, when the winning driver gets out of his car and have seen, first hand, the look of exertion mingled in with the feeling of elation, then you would know. The driver is an athlete and auto racing is a sport by any definition.
So, is it a pure sport? No, probably not in the spirit of running or bare-knuckled boxing or swimming. These sports require no equipment. But lots of sports require specific equipment. Sometimes its a bat and a ball and sometimes its a car.

Guys that question Nascar as a sport are same ones that went home crying because they got picked on driving bumper cars.
The best part is that this yahoo wouldn't last 15 laps at Atlanta, 10 laps at Darlington, or even 5 laps at Bristol.
All forms of auto racing are sports. Even drifting, which sure as hell isn't racing, is a sport. An extremely gay sport, but a sport none the less.
That's it! This guy is a wannabe drifting expert! It all makes sense now.

Ummmmm Like this question is asked at least twice a day. It is answered the same at least twice a day. Either your life is so boreing or you have not learned to do more than repeat others. What part of poker is a soprt? NOTHING! It is on espn too. As for NASCAR every part of the race is a sport. You might find that out if you could fit through the window to try it.

Its a sport because:
* like everything else they have to practice
*they have to lift weights to gain muscle (i.e. the pit crew lifting tires, the car, running around the car so they can change the tires, add gas, and make other adjustments)
*they have to have a game plan
* they are on a team
*lets see you concentrate in a car thats over 100 degrees for 4 hours that you cant get out of
*Just like every other sport it has a SEASON
* Its physical because not everyone can go thru that torture(yes i think sometimes it can b considered torture, i know i couldnt do it) of just being hot and sweaty for HOURS!!!
* and much much more
and no i do not like NASCAR b/c of drunk girls and beer.
awesome crashes YEAH!! but im not into girls and i cant drink beer yet

NavyMan your exactly right. i think soccer is stupid but hey ppl love it so i dont down grade it cuz i dont like it so i just dont watch it but i still support the USA in the olympics. Nascar is most definitly a sport its just like any other sport you have a team, a season, you practice all that stuff. those guys put in more hours than any other sport. the season starts in Feb. and ends in Nov. they get like 1 month off if that a year. the only other pro sport that compares to it is Baseball and even they get more than a month off. i take my hat off to the Nascar teams they actually deserve all the money they get unlike other sports they put there life on the line every week.
Lets go Junior make the Chase

I'm so tired of this question I really don't care anymore.
It's all about the car's anyway which I have an undeniable passion for.
I don't have a passion for a ball. I don't have posters and pictures of a ball and I don't race a ball. You can't ride a ball and you can't tweak it to go faster.(unless you take steroids like Barry Bonds) You can't go cruisin' on a ball and you can't put any tunes on a ball.

From dictionary.com:
Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Racing: a contest of speed, as in running, riding, driving, or sailing.
If you need it spelled out further, check out the past questions that are IDENTICAL to this one.
As Ernest Hemingway stated, "Bull Fighting, Mountain Climbing and Auto Racing are the only true sports, all the rest are just games."
