The first step is the undergraduate degree- common majors are biology, chemistry, psychology, or other science fields... but in order to go to medical school you need one year each in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics.
Next you take the MCAT exam which is over the above mentioned topics and reading and writing. After this test is over you begin the process of applications to school which is very challenging as most schools only accept 4-10% of applicants.
Once accepted you will spend 4 years studying at Medical school- the first 2 are traditionally spent in a classroom learning anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, etc... The last 2 years are traditionally spent doing clinical rotations and learning about the different fields of medicine by doing... you will then apply during your 4th year for residency at a hospital in the area of your choice
If you "match" meaning the school you apply to accepts you; you will begin approximately 3-4 years of residency where you are an MD but you are learning the field by working under more experienced doctors.
After residency you can chose to begin a general practice or do a fellowship which involves 3-5 additional years to go into a sub-specialty- an example would be to do a residency in pediatrics then decide to pursue pediatric cardiology.
So overall- 4 undergrad, 4 medical school, 3-4 residency, and 3-5 fellowship...
it is a LONG and expensive route- before you make the big bucks you will shell out thousands of dollars on applications, tuition, etc.

You would need a bachelors degree from an accredited university before you go to medical school. You don't need to major in anything science related at all if you don't want to. You'll just need to fufil credits for the courses medical school requires you to take. Then medical school would take another four years. Afterwards, you'll need to do a residency(on-job training of sorts) in your chosen specialty which can last up to 8 years or as little as 1 year for a general practioner before you start to earn the big bucks that everyone keeps raving about. So in general, it would be between 9 years to 16/17 years.

Doctors rush around the hospital, trying to visit with 20 - 50 patients within 2 or 3 hours, then go back to the office for appointments, trying to keep their times short due to how some people ramble on and on and on and on about everything thats going on in their life as if the doctor cares about anything besides what the patient has going on medically.
If you're going to the doctor to talk about your child's birthday party or a meeting from church, or even how weird the weather has been, save your breath.

What is this job like? Back to Top
Doctors make people healthier. When people get sick, doctors figure out why. They give people medicine and other kinds of treatment. They also give advice about diet, exercise, and sleep.
Doctors use science to figure out what is making people sick. Doctors examine people, listen to them describe their health problems, and do tests to see what is wrong.
There are many kinds of doctors. Family and general practitioners are often the first doctors that people go to when they get sick. These doctors treat common problems. They also send patients to other doctors, called specialists. Specialists are experts in different types of health problems.
For example, internists focus on problems with internal organs. Pediatricians care for children and babies. Surgeons perform operations, like fixing broken bones or transplanting organs.
Most doctors are doctors of medicine (M.D.). They treat all kinds of diseases and injuries. Some doctors are doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). They focus on muscles and bones.
Many doctors work long hours, at all times of day and night. Over one-third of physicians worked more than 60 hours a week in 2004. But doctors who work in small offices often have more time off. Doctors sometimes have to rush to the hospital to deal with emergencies.

Medical doctors take 4 years to get an undergrad degree, plus about 4 years of graduate school to get their M.D. degree. They may study specialties after that point in time.
