Some people mistake me as an 8th grader, when I'm about to enter my Senior year of high school. I'm 17, not 13. How can I look more my age, or perhaps even, act more my age? Advice, please.

Right now it seems like a curse, but as the years go by, you'll find it a blessing!
As for you current situation though, the best advice I can give is DON'T over do the older look. You'll only end up looking like your faking/covering something up even though you're not.

I'm 30 and I still get asked for ID when I go to 18 and up only clubs or try to buy drinks. I also have a really young sounding voice, so when telemarketers call me they always ask if my mommy is home. :) When you are older, you'll be happy to have a younger appearance. Don't try to "act" your age either. Whenever you "act" you are being someone else. Just be yourself, in the long run that is the only way you can be happy.

Oh, I know just what you mean. When I was a senior in high school, I got mistaken for being a 13-year-old all the time. It was terribly frustrating to look so much younger than I was. When I was 27, married and pregnant with my first child, there was this one old lady who looked at me very disapprovingly because she apparently thought I was an unwed teenage mother and she didn't approve.

I don't know if you are a male or female, because your avatar doesn't show, but I can tell you that this stage will pass. This is not much comfort, but trust me, there will come a time when you will be VERY glad that you look younger than your years. I am 45 and I am just now beginning to look older. People tell me that I look like I'm in my early 30's. When I was in my 30's, people told me I looked like I was in my early to mid-20's. As I get older and want to look younger, it's a comfort to me that I still do, even though my age is finally starting to catch up to my looks.

You asked for solutions. Well, you can't change how youthful you look, no matter what you try. Dressing in clothes that make you look older will do absolutely no good and will in fact make you look foolish because it will be obvious what you are doing. What you CAN do however, is to dress in clothing that helps you to feel confident and self-assured. Projecting confidence and assurance in oneself is a sure way to come across as more mature to others. I'm not talking about being cocky - just confident. If you relax about how young you look and just be yourself - a confident self - than even if others DO perceive you to be younger than you are, they will treat you as if you are older because they will view you as mature for your age.

There have been times when I have been talked down to as if I were younger and it has bothered me. Many times, it has been people who were younger than me who were doing this. In those situations, I have politely informed them that I am older than they are and that while it may be flattering when I'm older, I don't really appreciate people assuming I'm younger because I appear that way. Of course I don't have to say this now because I do look older finally. My voice on the other hand, still sounds very young. I've answered the telephone before, only to have the young-sounding 20'-something person on the other end ask me if they could talk to my mommy. I've had to tell them "I AM the mommy, can I help you?". I've also had to tell customer service reps when I've inquired about things and I've been treated disrespectfully, that "I might sound 12, but please believe that I am 45 and my request is a legitimate one" etc.

Hang in there. It does get easier. Just be confident, gracious and self-assured. No need to put people in their place, but do correct them politely if they assume you are much younger than you are. When you're in your 30's and older, it's quite a compliment to have people assume you are younger. When you are in high school on the other hand, it's quite embarrassing. There is nothing wrong with you setting people straight.

Some day you will wish you looked four years younger, you will grow out of caring about this after you are out of high school, it does not matter, for goodness sakes, do not put makeup on to change yourself, you will look cheap and still won't solve the problem - it is really NOT a problem, you will live through it all.
