I'm just curious. I mean, God and the Pope are TIGHT. The Pope is God's main man on Earth, surely out of all the people that need blessing, the guy with the direct line to the management floor would be the LAST person we'd need to ask God to bless???

I'm an atheistic catholic by the way... In that, I think the catholic church is a wonderful institution and it does great things in the community, especially in helping families in times of bereavement. I plan to bring up my (future) kids as catholics, as I feel that it's an important part of an irish childhood, and furthermore, the teachings of the church are as good a moral compass as any, and they are a good point of reference....

It's just the whole God part I've the problem with, as in, not believing in one.

You are way off my friend! God's main man was Jesus Christ and there is no other.

No man is more imprtant than another, the "Pope" is the head of the Catholic Church denomination (NOT) the head of ALL CHRISTIANS.

If you are a Catholic then yes the "Pope" (in position) is the head of the denomination.

If you are not a Catholic then the "Pope" has no rule or role in the Christian Church.

We ask God's blessing on the pope because of the great responsibility that comes with being the leader of the Catholic Church. Sure, he's close to God, but he's human, and he needs prayers. Moreover, we ask God to preserve the pope from all harm, bodily as well as spiritual.

I think people are just praying for continued help for the Pope to do his job the way he's supposed to. It's an awful job, really, not many of those elected had any real enthusiasm for being voted in, but they accepted it as God's will.
I'd say he'd be the first person to need God's blessings, if you want to call them that. Insights and help would be better requests. Blessings are kinda general.

We ask God to bless the Pope so the Catholic Church can continue to do all the good things you mentioned ... as enlightened, God inspired leadership is critical in all things.

As for your other comments ... there may be hope for you yet!

Prayer is the elevation of the mind and heart to God:
+ In praise of his glory
+ In petition for some desired good
+ In thanksgiving for a good received
+ In intercession for others before God

It is never wrong to pray for others before God.

Even if the person does not need more blessings from God (and who does not), it is good that we show love (agape) for all of our neighbors.

It is also good that we ask God to inspire leaders like the Pope to follow God's will easily in all things.

With love in Christ.
