My husband is serving in Iraq, and even though the boxes go to an APO address - the price is based by weight. We are National Guard, so we don't live anywhere close to a base. I know that some of the larger bases were shipping boxes for free, but we're hundreds of miles away from a base.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Here is the phone number for the USPS for FREE packaging to send care packages to your soldiers. Call 1-800-610-8734, select option #1, then #1 again, and ask for the "Military Pack". It includes 8 boxes, tape, packaging material, and labels. It will be mailed to those who call along with a ID # to reorder. It takes less than 10 days to
receive the materials.

In it will have some flat rate box which are the best. Just fill it and take it to your local post office with the customs form filled out. Hope this helps:)

Go the post office and get the flat rate boxes. You can stuff them silly and it's still a one time rate. I did this when my husband went to Iraq and save about $5 per box. You can go ahead and pick up a couple so you're prepared too. Also call UPS. If you're in the middle of nowhere they used to ship boxes for free to APO addresses. I don't know if they still offer this service or not.

Like other people said, use the flat rate boxes. It's less than 10 dollars per box. There are two sizes. One square box and then one that is a rectangular shape. Make sure that when you go to the post office the box has a red star on it that says flat rate.

OH and you can order the boxes for free online at usps.com. They will send you labels, tape, and customs forms too.

My husband is active duty and is currently in iraq on month 12 of a 15 month deployment and we live on a big post and I know we never get to send boxes for free ... I use priority...it gets there faster. I know the USPS will send you free priority boxes and other shipping items...but no one gets to send their boxes for free. I mail my husband a box every week..I dont mind paying the shipping because I know It will make his week by getting something from home.

Go to www.usps.com and request a 'deployment package'. They bring it right to your door---packaging tape included.
Best this to get is the Flat Rate boxes. You can put whatever you want in there and the cost is the same.

I say don't worry about the price, think about how you will make your hubby's day in the god aweful place. I am in the military and my hubby is too, and there is nothing more exciting than getting mail from a loved one. Just think it is only temporary and lets hope it makes it out of there to tell you how much he appreciated getting those packages. It is a great morale builder. Just remember it is only temporary and although it is hard the smile on his face when he receives it will be ....PRICELESS!

There are two types of shipment available through the U.S. Postal Service. One is SAM (Space Available Mail) and the second is PAL (Parcel Airlift Mail). Rates are lower than they are for regular parcel post. Check with your local post office.

Boy after 5 years of being Cannonfodder for the Halliburton/Bechtel Bottom Line you'd think the least they'd do is offer to ship things to your loved ones for free?

Contact Halliburton/Bechtel or any other Defense Contractor in Iraq see what they can do for you. I'M FRIGGN DEADLY SERIOUS, IF YOU DON'T SHAME ON YOU !!
