it can be a exhaust pipe that has a hole in it also, but the muffler is the first thing to check, usually any exhaust shop will give you a free inspection

lots of things can help make a car loud,mufflers,dumps,open header or exhaust even a fat bumpstick can

you can also have a leak as well. with that you hear a sort of ticking sound.

It could be. Or it could be an exhaust leak in the pipes, or the headers are leaking due to a faulty gasket or hole in them. Have an exhause shop check it out. You don't want the gases getting into the car's cabin.

or maybe the exhaust pipe is cracked before the muffler
