Cancer is a progressive disease that starts out small and advances to a large tumor capable of shedding microscopic cells into the blood stream or lymphatic system. This is called metastatic cancer because those small malignant cells can start new tumors in a distant location from the original tumor. There is treatment for all stages of cancer including stage IV. Stage IV is difficult to treat because the disease is so widespread, but it is not impossible. In general, depending on the type of cancer and the patients age and overall health there is a multi-modality treatment consisting of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation.

The purpose of chemotherapy is to try shrink and kill as many tumors as possible (there can be a few or literally hundreds at various sizes).. Chemotherapy is also systemic and follows the same path that microscopic cancer cells follow. It's hoped that chemo will kill any small or microscopic cells lurking in the body.

Radiation is used to shrink and kill tumors that are in one location. It is more difficult to use raditiation with stage IV disease because often the cancer is to widepread.

Surgery is the modality used to remove and resect all visible tumors. It is possible for surgery to completely eliminate all signs of disease. The problem often is that in advanced tumors the disease has wrapped itself around vital organs, intertwined into blood vessels, or is located in a region considered inoperable.

There are other treatments available for stage IV disease . . radiofrequency ablation can disintegrate liver tumors, gamma knife can be used successfully on brain tumors, proton therapy can exactly pinpoint a tumor and spare surrounding tissue, chemoperfusion is heated and placed directly into the tumor bed, autologous peripherial blood stem cell transplant, bone marrow transplant, and experimental Clinical Trials.

It is becomming possible for some patients with advanced cancer to find meds to stablize and control their tumors thereby making cancer a chronic disease.

Well staging a cancer depends on fist of all what type of cancer it is (or the origin because let's say you have colon cancer but you also have tumors in your lungs it is still considered colon cancer). Staging also depends on tumor sizes how many and if the cancer has spread to vital organs such as lungs and liver and as to how many vital organs. 4th stage cancer is the most serious and The American cancer Society as well as other cancer sights will show the odds of survival rates for stage 4 based on what kind of cancer, and by survival rates it usually is in terms of a 5 year period. I have lost 2 very important people in my life that both had stage 4 colon cancer which means they already had a metastis(spread) to their liver and lungs. My Father and my sister-in law. If you or someone you know has a stage 4 follow your heart and your doctors advice, not all stage 4's are death sentences. But if they tell you it is terminal, I suggest you do all of the things with your loved ones that you can do before you decline, the best 3 weeks of my life were the ending with my sis-in-law. It was the most bittersweet and yet I am so very thankful to have spent every last moment with her, and I know she felt the same way.We even got a massage 2 weeks before she passed and I will never forget our conversations or all of the tears and goodbyes for as long as I live.
Good luck~

Chemotherapy is NOT something that a person should ever do, in my opinion. Only 2.1% of people that get that done survive more than 5 years. It's simply abusive and destroys the person's ability to fight disease. 99% of all cancers are due to infections somewhere in the body. Many cancers are a result of bad dental work and infections there and also in the colon due to bad foods, chemicals, and toxins that have built up over the years. Chemotherapy is expensive and abusive. There are many things I would do if I were your dad, but chemotherapy is NOT one of them. At stage 4, it is late in the game to concentrate on being healthy, but the sooner he focuses on that, my belief is that he will be far better off, suffer a lot less, and maybe even extend his life. Since the colon dumps it's toxins into the lungs, I would definitely look at how he digests his food and the colon for sources of infection. The teeth also reflex to the lungs and if he has any infections there, especially root canal work that is grossly done poorly by typical dentists using the so called "modern dentistry" today that is aggressively carcinogenic. So the real answer to your question is it will depend on what he does to treat the cancer and what he does in relation to correcting the infections and getting good nutrition. good luck to you

Jennifer H gave you some good info. You don't say if you're just looking for information or if you or someone close to you has cancer. I would suggest that you talk with your physician (if it's you) or go to a good web site such as mayoclinic.com if you are just seeking information. If you have been diagnosed with stage four cancer and your physician hasn't explained it to you in terms that you can understand you need to see another doctor.

What is known about every type of cancer in stage 4 is that the patient has distant metastatic disease. Meaning that the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body away from where it originally started.

This varies depending on the type of cancer. Also there are sub-stages within a stage.
