I'm looking to buy a heavy bag for under $100 - will be practicing martial arts on it, so must be able to take both hard punching and kicking.

I've been told to go for a basic 100 lb cotton / I have good bag gloves already.

This is the one I'm looking at - note that I'm not interested in a freestanding type that you fill with water or sand.

for the 100$ you could easily buy suplies to make your own bag. Take for instance a scrap leather bag ,sew it and fil it with corn, when all the corn is ground ,,you can eat tortillas ,,Or you could go to the junkyard and find old seats ,to fill with such materials ,,depending on how hard you hit,,to fill your bag . Hang this from a garage ceiling or indoors . This homemade method lets you build to suit wherever you'll be putting it and you'll have a better bond with your bag ,,

I would say maybe since it is a canvass bag. You might be able to find an un-filled leather or ballistic nylon vinyl one for the same price and fill it with some small pieces of carpet padding. Ballistic nylon is nothing less than 18 guage thickness which is a good eighth of an inch thick. Most carpet places will give you some scraps for little or nothing and you just have to cut them up. While canvass bags are not bad and they are cheap they tend to rip or split; especially if you hit or kick them repeatedly on the same spot. So you have to be careful of that and at the first sign of ripping get out the old duct tape and circle the bag covering the area of the hole/rip as well as a few inches above and below it. That will help extend the life of the bag and is the reason why you sometimes see bags covered with duct tape.

I've owned a few and I can say that hands down the Powair water bag is the way to go. Sutffed bags are a pain in the butt and harder on your joints and hands over time. The water bag is also great because it has that smack sound like rocky punching the meat in the slaughterhouse. If you do get a water bag get the one without the foam padding. Just get the water only version. Also the 140 lb. bag is long enough for both kicking and punching. Title and Ringside both sell them.
