Because the artist who painted or sculpted is white. Black artists portray Him as black, latino's paint Him as Latino. He's one of the rare individuals every race wants.

But alas, He was a Jew, and would have looked like a Jew of that time.

I actually think the image you are talking about came from the Catholic church but has been changed over the years. Now we have every race creating Jesus to look like them when the fact is that He was a Jew, not black, white, etc. The only hint of a description of Jesus was in Isaiah. Isaiah 53:2b (NIV) 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. The only other source of His appearance would be the shroud of Turin if you believe that it was actually the shroud that Jesus was wrapped in. It seems that historically artists did think of the shroud as authentic because the resemblance of their art (not the blond haired Jesus) to the image on the shroud. to this day scientist don't have an explanation of how the image got there. I personally don't need to have an image of Him and do think it is silly that people don't look at the historical evidence of his heritage to try to create an image of Him for art or movies. I'm sure you will see that more recent movies have portrayed Him more closely to a Jew.

Jesus is prtrayed in many ways. The most common depiction of Jesus in Christianity is based on the Byzantine tradition, and portrays Jesus as dark skinned with brown eyes. I have never seen Jesus portrayed with blond hair. But the pale, blue-eyed Jesus is relatively rare, and is usually restricted to North American Catholicism.

He was Middle Eastern aka A JEW. As an Arab, and non-jew, I was taught that he was pale with blue eyes and blond haired. Middle Eastern's have blond hair and blue eyes. Although it is uncommon it isn't rare. He lived in the Palestinian region, modern day Israel, many Palestinians including my grandpa have light eyes and pale skin. My moms dad is blond haired, pale, and has green eyes. Jews and Palestinians are cousins both genetically and have similar physical traits. Due to the migration of Jews after WWII after the Holocaust they came back to Israel and slowly took control of it. Many of these Jews mixed with Europeans, this causing Jews to look more white. Generally Jews and Palestinians are Semetic people. Don't think of Jesus as a Middle Easterner. Think of him as Semetic.

Well the pictures you see of Him with blonde hair and blue eyes is from Europe in the Middle Ages. They were not too concerned about racial and ethnic accuracy of their paintings. All Christians know, or should know, that Jesus was Middle Eastern decent, therefore not white. I do not care if He was purple He is still my Lord and God. God bless.

Thats a good question. I like the answer up there about the artist being European. I think it's.... he could have been portrayed.. overweight.. brown eyes and not so good looking. Is there anywhere in the Bible where his looks are described?

I have never seen a portrait of Jesus with blonde hair nor blue eyes -- I've attended 10 years of catholic school also, seems he always tends to have long brown hair and brown eyes. However itt depends on where your from/who you are. to blacks, jesus is thought of as black, whites view him as white, etc. Its easier to "relate" to a god of your same ethnicity than attempting to relate to one of a different complete race i suppose? I think its another comfort thing that many people take part of unknowingly

This question has been posted many times, I personally don't know of any paintings like that. All the pictures Ive seen of Jesus are with brown hair and tan skin. I realize that they are only artists depictions of Him any way.

They are merely artistic impressions of course. Yes, Jesus was a Jew while here on earth. BTW His appearanc is not important. One day Christians will see Him as He really is. I cant wait!
